  1. I recently threw out my old 8 speed Campagnolo Athena group and replaced it
with 2006 10 speed Veloce. I've used a Mavic 10 speed chain. The chain
changes well and runs smoothly on all sprockets except the 13 of a 12-25
Veloce cassette. On the 13, it runs a little roughly. It took me a long time
to realise what the problem was, since the chain was correctly aligned.
Eventually I saw that the Mavic chain, which has almost straight edges on
the outer links, was resting on the spacer between the 13 and 14 sprockets
so that the teeth did not engage cleanly. The 12 is OK because the spacer
between the 12 and 13 is of smaller diameter than that between the 13 and
    14. The 14 and 15 etc. are OK because, although the spacers between them are
of the same diameter as that between the 13 and 14, the sprockets are of
greater diameter and lift the chain clear of the spacer. The cassette is as
packed by Campagnolo, I have not changed sprockets or spacers.

A Campagnolo chain looks, on the Campagnolo website, to have much more
concave sides to the outer links, which would clear the spacer. A Shimano 10
speed chain, which I have on another bike, also has more concave sides.

Is this a problem that anyone else has encountered? The Mavic website says
that the chain is compatible with Campagnolo 10 speed but does not give an
email address for me to contact them. Or have Campagnolo put the wrong
diameter spacer in? The low point between the teeth of the 13 sprocket
barely clears the spacer between the 13 and 14 sprockets.

    Hello there.

Nolt 10 Spd, but,...*YES*!!!!!! I had that *EXACT* problem on my Campy
9 Spd Veloce Miele Racing in the *EXACT* gear (2nd highest) bike using
a Camagnolo Veloce C9 chain. Strangely enough when I put the wheels
and chain from it onto a Sport Touring/Racing Miele the problem was
not present. The only thing that was different besides the frame was
that the racing bike had a Veloce triple crank and the Sport bike has
    an ancient Sugino 34 - 50 crank.

I am going to check the spacer on my wheel to see if it is the cause.

    Thanks for the pointer.

    Cheers from Peter

have you tried [horrors] a /campy/ chain?

  4. Well, I may have to use a Campagnolo chain. I'm a Campagnolo user but I just
wanted a chain that could be removed without a chainsplitter.

I am now interested to establish if Mavic are not being completely truthful
when they say that their 10 speed chain is Campagnolo compatible. if their
website said that it wasn't, I wouldn't have bought it.

I am using the Wippermann quick link thing on a Campagnolo Veloce 10
speed 5.9mm chain. The Wippermann is the older thicker 6.2mm 10 speed
version. Works OK. Next Wippermann quick link will be the new
    narrower 6.02mm quick link.

I hope you didn't really "throw out" the Athena...

  7. No, it's in a box. I'll try to find a good home for it. It's 12 years old
and all working well except for the right hand shifter. The indexing disc
and/or spring that holds the setting have worn so that it won't hold gears
in the middle of the cassette. I figured that after 12 years everything
would be getting worn so it was time to move on.

I'm disappointed that no one has confirmed my compatibility problem.

  8. Hi Peter,

Having trouble with the 2nd highest gear certainly suggests that it's the
same problem but I'm surprised that it would happen with a Campagnolo
cassette and chain. Also, I can't see how the situation would change with
another frame and crank set. My problem is that rather than the roller of
the chain resting in the gap of the sprocket, it is lifted slightly clear by
the edge of the side plate resting on the spacer. Only the cassette and
    chain are involved.

    Have you checked your spacer?

    Ciao,

    Bob

    Hi there.

No, I have not checked the spacer yet. I am waiting for a new Veloce
rear derailleur for that bike. I find it very interesting that I do
not have that problem with the Sport Racing/Touring Miele. I would
think that if the problem was too big a spacer on the 2nd highest
Veloce gear that the problem would persist on the other bike. Its
chainstays are a bit longer than the Miele racing bike. When I had the
Veloce bb and crankset installed on the racing Miele at the bike shop
they also checked the frame and dropout allignment and corrected it.
Therefore it should not be an allignment issue. Funny that it is only
that gear and with the 52 teeth ring as it dies not occur with the 42
    teeth ring.

I will be able to try the racing bike again and see if it is the cog
spacer that is causing the problem *IF* I can get a Veloce rear
derailleur by end of next week.

    Cheers from Peter

I sold a similar group in exc cond for a little over 200$ so you
should be able to sell it (on ebay worst case) for at least 100$, if
not more. Based on the pros Muzi and Chisholm, the cam never wears
out, just the springs. (If you want to be cheap, you can manually
widen the springs so they will catch the teeth, but replacements are
cheap (though 4$ for a tiny spring feels otherwise)).

For your problem, I suspect you haven't heard more is the rarity of
the Mavic chain. Given that it's not a problem with Campy/Shimy
chains, I think your next step is self-evident, even if no one will
    confirm a solution.

Mavic chain=Wipperman. Not as common as brand S, but by no means rare.
