Annual Oscar Party-need new ideas!

How about Southeast Asian? Start off with fresh spring rolls and peanut dipping sauce, then progress
to a Thai beef salad. Dessert can be ice cream with mango.

You didn't mention Greek. Moussaka can be eaten with fork only. Green salad with vinegary dressing,
feta and olives. Rice. Spanakopita or tiropita. (I'm not sure if I have the word right-- cheese
filling in filo triangles. Whatever filling for the filo, wrap it up in triangles which renders them
finger food.)

I was thinking along the same lines. If you wanted a few more dishes, you could add larb (ground
chicken, cooked, in a spicy lime juice-based sauce, served cold w/ lettuce leaves for wrapping), a
noodle dish (preferably one that can be made ahead....a vegetarian jap chae -- Korean glass noodle
stir-fry) served at room temp, maybe some Asian-sauced chicken wings or spare ribs, etc.

Not sure if this is a brilliant idea, but you could go with a Pirates of the Caribbean theme as
Johnny Depp is a nominee, and it got a few other nominations.

*Patties (good finger food)

*Jerk Chicken (you could do this on skewers to make it easier to eat)

*Rice and Peas (yummy with the addition of coconut milk)

*Coleslaw (easy and traditional)

Sweet Potato Fries with ginger dipping sauce (the fries can be purchased frozen or home made)

Fresh Fruit (display style or salad, your choice)

And of course Red Stripe Beer and some sort of Rum Punch drink.

How about a selection of quiches? You put out a bunch of crust-lined plates (buy them pre-made if
you like), add the vegetables and cheese (different one for each quiche), blend up enough custard
mixture for all the plates, dispense, and bake. Easy and inexpensive. Have a salad, munchies,
dessert, beverage, and you're done.

People gave you a bunch of (I think) great ideas. It occurred to me that you'll have to have some
food for the inevitable low carber.

Make a dish from the home countries of each of the foreign films that are nominated for a major
award (best picture, best foreign film) and/or the home countries of actors and actresses nominated
for major awards. The best thing with this theme is that since different countries will be
represented next year, you can do the same theme over and over.

How about some Middle Eastern mezze? Baba ghanoosh, hummus, tabbouleh, pita, kabobs, olives,
falafal ...

Milk Duds, hot dogs, etc. And giant 64-ounce cups of soda!

Whatabout Italian food? Lasagna, baked ziti, meatballs, maybe two or three types of pasta with
different sauces to go on it. Garlic bread, some Italian appetisers, would be nice.

I don't know how brilliant this is, but...it's supposed to be the year for Lord of the Rings to
finally clean up, so do a ring theme. Onion rings, friend calamari, apple rings, doughnuts, etc.
Anything round with a hole in the middle will work.

Or use all the best picture nominees and make a dish around each: the rings, of course; something
ship-based for Master and Commander; pizza with corn for Lost in Translation; mint juleps for
Seabiscuit (or California wine because he was a California horse); clams? for Mystic River.

LOL... Oh dear, I just got a flash of a bundt cake frosted in yellow with the black speech of
Mordor "One ring to rule them all, etc." written on it in frosting. ;D I think it'd be
hilarious, but probably requires more dedication than I've got.

If one is a LOTR fan, it shouldn't be too hard to come up with a menu corresponding to the
movie. One of the most endearing things about the Hobbits is their love of food and drink.
Can't argue with that!

It might not be every/anyone's "thing", but how about Japanese? Have them make their own hand rolls,
salads w/seafood "scraps" and your version of thousand island dressing, sake, cold noodles, hot
ramen or udon, fried rice, "omu-rice", or you can forget the sushi rolls and make the o-nigiri
w/cooked salmon-tuna fish salad-ume as a filling. If you go for the sushi, please do not forget the

How about a crepe party. You could make up a huge amount of crepes the day before, and store in the
fridge with wax paper between each pair, so they don't stick. Then have bowls (chafing dishes if you
have them) of fillings. You could have 1) spinach with goat cheese. 2) tiny cubes of ham and
mushrooms in a cream sauce, 3) chili, 4) chicken in cream sauce {you could use canned chicken for
