An Inspiring Sight

Sitting here at my desk, watching the snow blow outside the windows, I see a guy on a black Turner(?) with a yellow jacket fighting the wind riding down the street. And that right after I read bout Kennedy's night ride last night in the snow! There's a huge gulf between the observers and the doers. I guess the question is, how bad do you want it? paladin

Sitting here at my desk, watching the snow blow outside the windows, I see a
guy on a black Turner(?) with a yellow jacket fighting the wind riding down
the street. And that right after I read bout Kennedy's night ride last
night in the snow!
There's a huge gulf between the observers and the doers. I guess the
question is, how bad do you want it?

I've just been compromising by strapping my XC skis to my townie and
riding to the XC trailhead. Right now the skiing is better than the
riding and it will probably stay that way for the forseeable future.
It was -22 this morning and yesterday's high was 7. That combined with
the three feet of snow from last weekend makes skiing a better option
for now.

Now that's real weather, Colorado style! As soon as we get a little more
white stuff, my xc skis are coming down off the wall. Love it, when the
woods are silent, dark and deep.

heh, I can relate to this. A nine mile ride on sunday, in the crisp clear
cold air, on top of just a bit of snow... is a far cry from the fricking
skating rink that everything has turned into. I brought the Svelte Hawaiin
from the garage yesterday to warm up and parked her next to my desk. The
plan is to clean the mud off and get the derailleur adjusted ( one last
time) before she might go up on hooks for the winter.
I did meet my goals this summer: I can finally do small jumps... nothing
big, just fun, AND I can pop my front wheel up onto things.

I have such high hopes, I still have the SS in the back of the S.U.B. With
that said, the roads were too slick to drive my truck, as it was. Ha. But
still hope for getting out so long as everything stays frozen. I don't
want to get "injuried severly" like Dan Goods, though....

It was really bad yesterday. I took my mom to the airport at 6 am. I knew it
was going to be nasty when I went sailing through some interserctions that I
had allowed extra stopping time for. Good tires? ABS? Careful techinique?
Forget it... Mr Adventure took over an hour to go 7 miles to his office...
cars sideways on every hill in town.

True, but XC skiing could still be done on totally flat terrain, not
that I'd want to do that!

Back in the old days when I lived in the east, we'd get a big dump of snow
that would get XC skied out in a week. Once the trails were hard and
crusty, the skiers would abandon the trails until the next dump. That made
for epic biking until the deep snow hit again. It was like hard-pack, and
even nasty dismounts were usually nicely padded. As long as the air temps
didn't get brutal and hurt the lungs, there was usually an option for some
outdoor fun.
Things I remember about really cold weather biking :
- I found my cheap fork had "auto-lockout" when temps got sub-freezing. I
never bothered switching oil weights or anything, but always thought a
simple elastomer fork (or rigid) would be best for cold weather riding.
- My feet couldn't handle the temps in light biking shoes. I'd either put
on platform pedals with some really big old traps to allow for heavy hiking
boots, or just use platforms.
- swapping fit kits in my helmet so I could fit a thin fleece skull cap
under it.
- plastic shifters gets really brittle in deep cold.
.... and finally, all that nasty frozen stuff (condensed moisture, yeah,
that's it!) on your upper lip when the ride is done.

That's why I was specific about "up and down hills". Anyone can xc
ski on flat terrain, it's just not as fun as being on slopes. I had a
great xc ski the other day at Steamboat Lake and it was nice and
hilly.
