An ill wind blowing...

It's autumn now and I think because of the reduced daylight hours there is more irritability. I'm certainly noticing more aggressive drivers on the roads, sadly.

Unfortunately september was my 9th highest mileage month this year. I
think I managed about 55 miles. Still its over now and i am looking
forward to getting out tomorrow.

Like many newsgroups, urc is improved if you killfile
articles with a comma on the "Newsgroups:" line.

I'm not cycling more or less yet. I might get out on the hills more when
winter comes though.

I agree, that's enough to make anyone a bit short-tempered.

I always thought a University would have been a wonderful place if it
wasn't for the students (indeed BT's Martlesham Heath research centre -
since renamed Adastral Park and gone badly down hill - used to seem to
me the perfect place to work - plenty of very intelligent people,
plenty of fascinating projects, and NO STUDENTS).

Carol, where are you coming from? Simon's comment applies far more
to Cambridge than to Unseen. That's not joking, nor even exaggerating ...
and it's not from my student days at Cambridge, but from my postdoc
time at AN other uni, when we got the comments from some Cambridge
colleagues with a frankness they wouldn't have expressed in front
of the students.

I don't think there's every anything "mere" about an OU gradudate.
"Normal" graduates usually do their courses full time and don't have to
work too hard to motivate themselves to turn up (after all, how else would
they chat to their friends), whereas an OU student usually fits it in
around their Real Life (tm) and has to work bloody hard to do so.

It's even more impressive when you combine that with the fact that they
have to watch televised lectures recorded way back when fashion was
*really* scarey :-)

The sad part was, when I went to my first Summer School, many moons
ago, the drunken louts roaming around the campus late at night singing
raucously were the tutors :-)
