  1. I love Meb, he's my man, but claiming him as an "American" needs an
asterisk. In February of '06 I posted this below regarding Ryan Hall
    on rec.running

"I saw this guy race last week in the USA XC Championships, he won the
    12K @34:38. A week later he's racing in the World's Best 10K in San
Juan @ 29:25 (Kenyans took the top 10 places (men), Ryan took a very
    very respectable13th place)".

April 23, '07 - AP- LONDON -- Ryan Hall made his marathon debut in
style Sunday -- and nearly upset some of the sport's top athletes.
Hall, 24., ran the fastest time for an American making his first
appearance in a marathon, finishing seventh Sunday in the London
Marathon in 2 hours, 8 minutes, 24 seconds.
Hall was in the lead group until the final 11/2 miles. Only then did
his inexperience show, missing out on a four-man sprint finish won by
Martin Lel, Kenya, in 2:07:41. Hall finished 18 seconds behind
marathon world record holder Paul Tergat and 30 seconds behind two-
time world champion Jaouad Gharib. "I dreamed about being with those
guys for 23 miles and I did that today and I took my swing," Hall
said. "Hopefully I'll be a bit stronger next time and run a bit
smarter." Hall led the field past the 35-kilometer (21.75-mile) mark.
    _

Ryan Hall has made a big splash in my book for American Marathoners.
Considering how "green" he is in the game, over the future years he
can easily win one of the majors (chicago/berlin/nyc/london/boston,
etc.). The brightest American Hope in a very long time.

A fainter asterisk than a few of our other imports (and I like them
too - not meant as a knock). Meb went to high school in this country
    - it's not like he was a full grown adult and accomplished runner when
    he first set foot here.

And of course his biggest moment in the spotlight prior to London was
breaking the American record in the half marathon this spring with a
time of 59:4x, which is more than respectable on the world stage.

His 2:08:24 at London is huge! Fastest American debut marathon
propels him instantly to #2 fastest American marathoner. Hall's for
    real.

Did you notice this quote, lance?

While stars like Khannouchi and Olympic gold medalist
Stefano Baldini were forced to drop out because of the
warm conditions, Hall followed coach Terrence Mahon's
orders and made sure he got each of his bottles. The heat
was only a minor problem for the Californian.

"I was drinking water a lot," explaining that he did not
simply throw it on his body. "It didn't feel too bad."

I don't think anyone even wins one of these things "easily" but yeah,
one would think he should be a serious contender if his legs don't
    fall off.

Though not real soon in any of those races, as he's expected to run
the Olympic Trials here in Central Park this fall, and if that goes
according to plan, in Beijing next year for Olympics. I'd think
that'd keep someone out of other marathons until at least fall 08,
maybe spring 09 - and that's assuming he wants to focus on marathons
more or less full time, which remains to be seen.

I'm the only true american hope.

  5. Yup, hydration strategy is paramount in these conditions. I believe a
lot more of these elites practice glycerine loading than we know.
Deena Drossin Kastor is just up front and open about it and she's said
she does it in all races despite weather. However it can be tricky,
the right mixture for your body. So in last week's Boston Marathon,
did you note where she had a "bathrooom break"...right in the race she
said she was having stomach problems and had to deal with that so she
was forced to stop and use the bathroom. If you note her career
she's had these "stomach problems" before in races. I suspect this
is really the result of not having the glycerine loading dialed in
just right as the risk of getting it wrong is just this - stomach
    problems.

I have some friends that ran Paris 8 days ago, another scorcher, Steve
ran it right? I hear they ran out of water on the course for the
runners and restaurants were providing water and wine for the runners
to hydrate them. I'm going to tinker w/glycerine loading in my
training just for some exploratory purposes and if I sense a
noticeable gain in running in the heat & humidity that's certainly
coming, I might employ it for 2 Half & the NYC Marathon. We'll see.

I think both him and Abdi are legit.

I put them in a different category to say Lagat and Khannouchi.

Not that Ryan needs any of these qualifiers anyway, he's already faster
than Meb (if not Khannouchi), and he also holds the national half marathon
    record.

Why do you want to put not so natural stuff in your body?
It is controversial at best and may not help in the conditions
you may race. Here is an interesting discussion about it:

Yup, Hall is quite inspiring. He stood tall winning the 12k x-country, then
the American HM record. someone to watch for sure.

Yep, twas a scorcher. I suspect a lot of the mid-pack runners must have
taken two bottles of water each time for them to run out - Paris is really
    well-organised for that, usually.

How did your Harlem buddy (Mr Van Putten was it?) do?
