Ambleside parking

If you head out of town towards Grasmere I seem to remember
there being free car parking alongside the road ? Somewhere
in the area where theres usually an ice cream van if my
memory serves me well . . . .

On the one way road back into Ambleside as though you have
just come over the Bridge from Clappersgate there is a
turning on the left to an industrial estate next to the
bowling green. I always park on the road there. No yellow
lines or restrictions.

When entering the town from the south take the left hand
road at the lights heading towards Great Langdale.
Immediately after going over the bridge over the river take
a right turn heading towards Miller Bridge. Theres parking
along this road for I would guess 50-60 cars totally free
but.....BE WARNED ....BE EARLY

I don't like paying for parking either, but I have to say in
this case I'm with Ambleside. The main car park is usually
full and with people driving round it in circles hoping to
be passing at the moment someone is leaving. So when we went
last (admittedly Easter Monday) to go shopping it took us an
hour to get there and an hour to park. It seems reasonable
to me that parking should be primarily for those planning to
use the town: I'd suggest you park outside Ambleside
(perhaps even closer to your walk start). You haven't said
where your walk will be. That might help people to suggest
alternatives.

Having said all that .. I did park overnight on street in
Coniston last Friday and Saturday, while out camping....
Kettle/pot, Farthing.

Yes, but a car parked unattended for 4 days can pick up
quite a few nails in it's tyres......

Used the car park at the end of January ..... and it was 6
pounds for over 4 hours and up to 12 hours. Didn't have time
to drive and find alternative, so paid the price. Was also
in the Glenridding National Parks car park the day before,
and that was 5 pounds 50 for over 4 and up to 24 hours.
Walkers are paying the price ..

Had a good clock-wise circuit of the Fairfield Horseshoe
though from Ambleside. However, I left my boot-cleaning
brush on the step near the public toilets. Will be checking
to see if it is still their next weekend, when hopefully I
shall be in the Lakes for a 3 day walking break. Hope
nobody took it!

Sadly, I've not done Wansfell precisely because in the days
when Timothy was small and travelled on my back and the
little Wainwrights were on the agenda, I could never decide
where to park! Wainwright definitely prefers attack from the
Ambleside end, but the alternative is from the Troutbeck
side, which has several normally available on-road parking
spots that would do. The approach is down Nanny Lane -
perhaps appropriate for your circumstances :-)

Opposite the smithy at the north end of the village, but
only room for a few cars and taken quite early.

This one looks promising, but thanks to everyone for
their suggestions. As for early, well we should be there
for 9am :-)

I personally seemed to recall some parking on the road up to
Kirkstone Pass, but my memory is not what it was... (and
that's not where we want to be, really).

I suppose it's a bit mean trying to avoid putting something
back into the area, but I just object to paying quite so
much, and especially when the sums involved require
ridiculous amounts of change.

The warning is probably applicable to any car park in the
Lakes, free or not, if it's a nice day, and most of the pay
ones are pretty expensive these days. I think it might be
because whilst they realise the local economy relies on
tourism, there are a lot of tourists turning up for the day
with- out putting anything in.

Oh, and *PLEASE* don't park on the side of the road in a
really stupid place. I know of one bus driver who is
planning on releasing the frustration that causes him on his
last day of work...

Now, I *really* object to completely non-demand related
ripoffs. 6 pounds for a day in what was probably a virtually

You haven't said where your walk will be. That might help
people to suggest alternatives.

recovers, I don't want to push the boat out, so we are just
doing an easy amble around Wansfell, possibly detouring into
Troutbeck to check the pu^h^h facilities. As such, it
doesn't really matter where we park, although I've not yet
seen the suggested route so am not entirely sure which end
of town is preferable. (If it is a decent walk guide, it
should really suggest economic and considerate spots.) I
fully agree that the main car park should be an amenity for
town visitors and am quite happy to use (and pay for) an
alternative one, but I think you will admit the local
council don't exactly provide a lot of guidance in this
respect. A simple "long stay" or "short stay" sign on
approaching the town would be most useful.

I used to have the use of a cottage near Hawkshead. Many is
the time we set off to town X or village Y only to have to
detour elsewhere due to a complete inability to park. I'm
not sure I have the patience to try for an hour anywhere !

True - but then I bet opinions change when others park
outside THEIR house...

The village I live in has poor parking space - there's a 2
public car parks provided (Free) but visitors insist on
parking in the middle of the village.

I don't expect to be able to park right outside my front-
door (which opens directly onto the pavement and end of
terrace leaves no scope for off-road parking for anybody in
the immediate vicinity) but I do get p*ssed off when people
just dump their car in any fashion when its obvious that if
they parked a little more considerately, more cars could be
parked in the same space.
