You've all heard a lot about this weekend, that very good riders have dared to call, "Epic." For me,
when you add up the combination of good friends, good riding, awesome trails and scenery, and a big
group ride in high back-country without any accidents or injuries, that's a huge success. Add to
that the setting on Payette Lake where many of us stayed, and the long weekend was perfect.
We left Boise on Thursday, giving us a good day and a half with the kids at the cabin:

The day cliff jumping and swimming was a blast, like living in a mtn dew commercial.
The kids had it pretty rough when we were out riding:

In between rides, there was always lots to do, inside and out:

Our Friday nt "warm-up" rides to Osprey Point were enough to convince me to *NOT* bring my SS the
next day. That was only a 9mi round trip, but it was mighty *intense.* Probably a good call, as the
course we took Saturday wasn't all that tough, but I rode parts of it more than once as sweeper and
all around safety guy.
Even the world's most spoiled dog liked it out in the country:

Craig N (we had 3 Craigs), with whom I've ridden almost everywhere it seems, got back into riding
just recently, after giving his wife twin girls, after their youngest teenager had just turned 19!
Dat boy ain't shootin any blanks. But anyway, he took a couple years off to chase babies, but he
came up for this trip, and handed a very messed up bike to Mr. Goodwrench, who had it shining and
spinning like new in about an hour:

You've heard about how it took us a couple hours to get started on Saturday morning, due in part to
one of our shuttle rigs getting lost (sort of). So we milled about, listened to Adam's bragging,
Jerry's stories, and so on:

Mr. Penny didn't get enough with the "easy ride" we did, so he added 11mi and took a death march
along the Secesh River on a "trail" that hadn't been cleared or tended in years. He was grinning
later at the bbq, but I know he was hurtin. My hat's off to him.
At the lake, the two SS maniacs kept us entertained. Here's GMan hucking up onto a 3 or 4 foot high
rock, following in JD's treads:

Father and son: Ahhhhh. How sweet. I was amazed that my boy Mike and his buddy Joel wanted to go on
the long ride Saturday, since neither of them had ridden more than 2 or 3 times this whole year. But
Michael is so tough and strong, he determined to hang with the front group, and he did it. Joel's in
good shape from Karate and other sports. Joel hung back a bit & kept me company as sweeper.

Craig N had always wanted to see the Bomber that had crashed into the lake after WWII, and
got his wish:

Craig and I probably have a dozen of these types of photos from very cool trips & rides all over the
PNW. Our wives are starting to wonder about us:

Joel used one of my beater/loaner bikes that was too big for him, and heavy as a Huffy (almost) and
finished strong, I might add. In fact, almost the whole Brown fleet was in production except for the
beach cruiser, and the 3 or 4 kids bikes back home. The SS didn't make the Loon Lake ride, but I
used it on the chairlift riding the next day. So here's Joel toward the end, still looking good:

Mike and Joel, who had no idea what to expect. Mike hung with Gman, Jerry, & Adam at the front, (but
almost killed himself in doing so):

Sunday was our cool - down riding at Brundage ski resort, and as I have posted a couple times in the
past, pure fun: gallery.consumerreview.comViewfromBrundage.jpgOpen ↗

So there you have it.
It's all about passion, love, pain and pushing overcoming barriers and limitations to make the
impossible happen. Even the slowest riders showed great courage just to come and risk
embarrassment and injury. For me, that means infinitely more than hearing from the self-appointed
experts and critics who can talk tough from a keyboard, but won't put it out on the line like
these fourteen did.
Hope to see more of you next year.
