  1. Another reader posted re: using an Altoids tin for RF shielding. I found another use for them. My el
    cheapo (less than US$10) Schwinn computer works well but it doesn't continuously *log* speed, so I
    designed and built a logger using a microprocessor, some EEPROM (data storage that needs no battery
    backup), and a 9v battery .... and everything fits in a round Altoids Tangerine Sours tin. I filed
    out the center of the "O" in "Altoids" to make a window for an LED that flashes once/second as long
    as the bike sheel is rotating (I like visual feedback). I bought a second Schwinn computer to get
    the nice sensor/connector. Altoids tin clips onto the handlebars next to the Schwinn computer. Works
    great. It has enough storage capacity to log each wheel rotation time over a distance of nearly 90
    miles. Data is downloaded to my PC after a ride, and the download program computes instantaneous
    speeds and write them to a file for graphing. Total cost (neglecting cost of Altoids), including
    battery: about US$17.

    If you put magnets on eight spokes then you could log your continuous speed eight times per
    rotation, of course your speed would register eight times higher.

    You just mount one of those large industrial magnets on your handlebars, and then get a fishing pole
    and duct tape that to your back, so it projects about 3 feet out in front of the bike. Then hang a
    hunk of iron off that. This pulls the magnet on the handle bars forwards, theoretically increasing
    your speed.

    Just have to be careful the hunk of iron doesn't hit you in the forehead during steep up hills, or
    high winds. That can be distracting. ;-)

    Pure genius! Even better than the carrot on a stick for the donkey.

    In fact, make it a simpler system: Duct tape the pole to the top tube (sloping top tubes make this
    work better) and hang the magnet from the end of the pole. Of course, those with aluminum frames
    (like myself) are SOL, but steel riders will have a perpetual motion free energy propulsion
    system...and the law of conservation of energy be damned!

    Hey, magnets and conservation of energy. Seriously now. It is possible, I believe, to construct a
    set of magnets where one floats above the others indefinitely, with gravity holding it down. Hey,
    for that matter, gravity and conservation of energy. Any given piece of matter has a certain amount
    of gravity, and that gravity never runs out. How the hell does that work?

    don't usually ask. I generally just take that stuff for granted...
