I know someone who was stopped many years ago by the local plod for riding a
bike with assistance from one of these devices. The copper knew that he was
breaking some law or other but he wasn't quite sure which one. He was told
to not get caught doing it again.

I want one, not for the bike but for everything else, the skate board,
surf board, kayak, ooh skiing up hill.

One of those and a set of inline skates, I see a Darwin award heading
my way. 🙂

Not sure about the motorbike licence but definitely had a private pilot's
licence - probably should have claimed that he was attempting to either
take-off or land.

Nah. If it was a wind-up, then the prop assembly would be mounted somewhere
below the saddle, and there would be a whacking great big elastic band
runninig along the inside of the crossbar, anchored with a large matchstick
placed through two holes drilled in the crossbar. Perhaps an application
for used inner tubes?

Or else there would be a key stuck out the side of the motor.....

But the bike doesn't have an engine, it's the rider that's powered - a
bit like the old "you can have flashing LEDs attached to your clothhing
but not to your bike" argument. :-)

But is the bicycle powered? The pack is on the rider, it is not
attached to the cycle.
