Anyone familiar with this Dark Peak Valley? I got diverted into it last weekend and found a superb path half way down the eastern side of the valley. New access shows the whole valley opened up, although I presume fom the signs in the valley it was opened up to walkers some time ago. It seems that a way through the valley starts with a track on the Western side at Alport Farm and then goes up on the east side after the woods. Anyone walked it all the way to the top of the valley? A super path with great situations.

I had my first taste of it just over a week ago. I came from the A57 up to the farm and then went up the path you came down by the sound of it. I then followed the eastern edge past the trig at 129933 before heading over Bleaklow.

It did look good from the edge. Their 40 year plan sounds like it will make it even better for when I get into my eighties too!

Is that the one that goes up from the farm to Alport Castles ? Nice track if so and a good walk along the pastures above all the way to Bleaklow, although there's a bit of big-hopping to do on the way. Golden Plover territory.

Once decended this way from Bleaklow, exiting over past the Castles.. Definitely a must see.. I like the way the valley deepens from teh plateau.

No, at the farm follow the river and pass between woods on either sideof the valley. After the woods cross the river and climb half way up the other bank giving you great views down the valley. It would make a good circular with the track you mention. The path contours along the valley side, presumably coming out at Grains in the Water.

I've been down that one some years back. I remember looking at 'Grains in the Water' and wondering why such an ordinary pool in the river got such a curious name! IIRC there was a Scout camp down nearish Alport Castles.

'Grain' appears to be a local colloquialism for 'stream'. There's a few of them thereabouts.

Quite likely. There's odd paths all over the place up there. The dotted line that appears to terminate at the trig at 128932 actually carries on quite clearly along the subsequent ridge. I have no doubt that a similar track persists the whole length of the skyline on that side of the valley.

There is 'fun' to be had trying to follow the stream, although it gets tiring with the upping & downing to bypass shaley banks, etc.
I can recall the stream well. One tired day with a bunch of mates returning after camping. Threw my bag over first intending to jump after it. Bag pulled me into stream. Soggy walk all the way back to the pub/bus stop (7 miles I recall).

There was a Scout hut/bothy thing accessed from the farm but further up the hill on the eastern side across the stream. I can recall many happy times there as it was easily accessible (bus and a 7 mile walk) for us lads even when there wasn't anything organised by leaders.
