I went to another bike shop today, I've decided to get a road bike rather than a hybrid. Went to another LBS today, he suggested the Allez Triple (aka Allez 24) or Allez Double.
I picked it up and it seemed very light, has mostly Shimano components, carbon forks. It's £529, £130 than my original budget but I think I'll be glad I spent more in the long run.

I bought an 06 model of the Allez Triple a few months ago and have thoroughly enjoyed riding it since. I don't have much to compare it with as it's my first 'proper bike' but I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

I'm having second thoughts after reading Ben's post. There's bikes with the next Shimano group set up around the £500 mark.

I like the Allez. I persuaded my partner to get a Dolce, which is sort of the female version. You seem to get good kit for your money.

There are a few of mail-order-only bikes- that have tiagra in this price range- ribble cycles have a tiagra bike for £400. Ribble also has the addvantage of upgrading/downgrading components with their online bike builder. Never used them for buying a bike though.

Ribble will also sell you a bike with a proper Campag groupset for not much more.
You wouldn't get chance to see if it was what you want until you got it though. I don't think Ribble would accept returns and you don't get any 7-day cooling off period if it's custom built.

Been to a few bike shops and they only seem to offer Sora bikes at £500. I would go with the one in your URL but it seems to be designed for people with less flexibility. Any other suggestions for a £500 Tiagra bike?
I was thinking of the Sirrus Elite, any good?
I like the '7-day test ride' that Ribble have. I could just keep ordering and returning bikes until I've got one I'm happy with. I'm not sure whether they'd accept a bike back that had got some use on the roads though. Anyone got any experience with that?

I know two people whose Ribble frames fell apart, I think by coming apart at the lugs. These were brazed and lugged 531 steel frames, evidently not well-built though. This is possibly not relevant any more though as I expect they use generic welded aluminium frames these days anyway.

It's a flat-bar road bike, which gives you only only hand position- I don't like riding more than 10 miles without being able to move around- at least fit bar ends to give you another position. There are lots of flat-bar road bikes with better equipment than their dropped bar relatives- mainly because the STI's cost a huge amount- e.g. RRP of £140 for Tiagra 10sp.
I wouldn't be put off by the Focus Ergoride's description of being for people with less flexibility- the tops of the bars on the ergoride will be roughly where they bars of the Sirrus is (the ergoride has brake levers on the tops too), but gives you the 3 additional hand positions of a dropped bar.
