  1. Thought this article would be of interest to this group . . .

    As in most everything, too much exercise--normally a very good thing--
    can actually be bad for you.

    Even though a key part of managing high blood pressure and heart
    disease, new animal research suggests there CAN be too much of this
    good thing. The August edition of the journal "Hypertension" reports
    that researchers from the University of South Dakota found in
    experiments with rats that excessive exercise worsened high blood
    pressure and led to progression to heart failure in rats with high
    blood pressure.

    Because of all the previous findings about the benefits of exercise,
    these new findings in rats are unexpected. An editorial published with
    the study says that the implications for humans are not yet certain.
    Dr. Paul Christian Schulze, of Boston University Medical Center, and
    Satyam Sarma of Brown University warn that the findings "should raise
    our awareness" of the potential harm intense exercise might do to
    people with untreated high blood pressure.

    Researchers found that rats which lived with a running wheel tended to
    exercise excessively. The results, over time, were structural
    abnormalities in the heart and a reduced pumping ability -- all of
    which were worse in the active animals than in the sedentary ones.
    It's likely that the rats "simply exercised too much."

    It's obvious that scientists and clinicians now need to focus on
    defining the fine line between beneficial and detrimental effects of
    exercise.

    Well they can produce all the "online studys" and "internet blogs"
    that tell us we're gonna die from running. Facts are runners have THE
    lowest rate of cardiac death than any other group of athletes, and
    far, far less than the sedentary public. These are published studys in
    ACTUAL medical journals going back 30 years.
    Lets face it, these fat dorks will do anything to be like us, but
    since they can't they want us to be like them instead.

  5. My mistake on the source of the original science . . . This study
    appeared in the August 2007 issue of "Hypertension" - a journal of the
    American Heart Association. It is not the same association that I
    mentioned in my post above. Please forgive the error,

    Humans are by nature and evolution long-distance walkers/runners, after
    all the car hasn't been around that long. So this is the best and most
    natural form of fitness for the body. But even exercise taken to
    extreme is detrimental to your health. All one has to do is look at
    Bruce Lee. No one was more dedicated to training than he was. But he
    took it to the most extreme level he could and what happened to him? He
    died at the same age as Chris Farley, who took his body to the same
    extreme level, just in the totally opposite direction.

    Exactly my point. If an otherwise unhealthy person, wether it be
    hypertension, or other life threatening disease, intense exercise
    could hurt them. Hence the "check with your Dr before starting any
    exercise regimen" warning.

    The drug killed him, not the condition he was being treated for. In
    India when Dr's went on strike, the death rate fell by over 50%.

    We've got all kinds on this newsgroup, but I'm pretty sure none of the
    regulars is a rat. Thanks for the heads-up just in case, though.
    Other members of the rodent family reading this may want to watch for
    the followup studies on squirrels, marmots, and the like.

    by professional athletes who do even more exercise (but eat properly,
    rest and alternate easy and hard sessions, etc.)

  19. I heard another the theory that ultra-running fries your mitochrondia
    and ages you prematurely via free radicals.
    The doctor who invented the term Areobic Exercise, Ken Cooper,
    and started the running boom is in that opinion minority.

    All Good points. But remember this "study" only used ONE chemical in
    the blood that is ONE indicator of heart problems. Nowhere did any
    rats actually develop any problems, and in the humans they took this
    reading from (after marathons and races that place huge demands on
    you) how many do you think would've given the same reading on a normal
    day? ZERO that's how many. The whole thing is one of the top 3 "most
    ignorable faux-studys" ever not published. Pure BS, with more holes
    than swiss cheese.
