Agreed - but the position put was that ALL of France was against Armstrong and his team, - on
today's evidence that clearly was not the case.

I never did think that, the French people seem to be genuinely delighted with the USPS team.

I've found that cycling fans have an enormous amount of respect and admiration for the race leader,
almost regardless of who it is.

I was fortunate to be on Alpe d'Huez about 100 meters up from where he gave "the look" and took off.
Before Lance arrived, things were a bit unsettled; lots of light-hearted trash talk, people pushing
their own guy as the best, etc. But when Lance came through, everything changed. Suddenly, because I
was American, I was everybody's best friend. All manner of strangers telling me how great they
thought Lance was etc.

The cheap shots that you read in the press simply don't mirror reality once the race gets going.

I agree. I was in Nice when Lance had control of the race in 2001 (no the race was going north and
me south to the playa). My girl friend and I were looking for a place to watch the finish on TV. And
because it France and for no good reason [censored] is always closed, or the bars had football on, or no
TV, UGH! Anyway I finally see some random bar (that was also closed), but inside the owner and a few
locals were watching the tour. As soon as we spoke English and pointed to the TV they invited us in
(they spoke almost no English), but were super friendly. They gave us a couple of cafes and helped
us cheer on Lance. This was 2001 when the papers were ripping on Lance, and some "fans" were on the
roads with the big needles. Anyway when the camera showed the people running with the needles the
bar patrons were not pleased. I knew this because they signaled thumbs down with a grunt, and an
"annnh" sound. Then they spent the whole time trying to us in the worst English how great he was
"Lance Strong, Champion". I am not even that big a fan. So I figure if some French dudes in the
crappiest part of Nice, are spending there afternoon have a few drink, a lot of smokes, a lot of
coffee, and are rooting for Lance then the media was way off base.
