  1. Hi All,

yay, authorisation from Senior Management obtained. This one is very
local to me here in Dublin (goes past my house heading South from
    Dublin into Wicklow).

    http://www.wicklow200.ie
    http://www.wicklow200.ie/2006/route.shtml

    Jun 11 2006. 200K, 2500 vertical meters of climbing, 14hr limit, 2
    controls.

Sorting out my club license now, then just waiting for entries to open.
This will be my first long (>120k) group ride.

If anyone from the UK is interested, the start/finish is in University
College Dublin, which is about 6k from Dublin city centre.
There's accomodation available (student block accomodation, otherwise
empty during the Summer), and it's only 4-5 miles from Dun Laghoire
(linked to Holyhead by multiple fast and slow ferries each day), and
they've some kind of deal worked out with Stena Line.
It could make a great long weekend away if you could take Monday 12th
    off as well.

I've done all of this route in bits and pieces, but never all together.
Really fabulous scenery in that part of the world, and a couple of
cruel climbs (see route link above - includes profile of climb). Hope
it's not too hot on the day.

There's no formal Audax structure here in the Republic of Ireland - how
would the route compare for Audax points/climbing?

I know I'm going to have a lot more questions for the experienced
Randonneurs in the group over the next few months. In the meantime,
I'm going to to dig into the spares box and swap the road gearing on
the bike for a triple + wide ratio block.

I'm OK with 100K solo runs along the coast, so I've got to find my
climbing legs and lungs between now and June. I'm sure I left them in
the spares box too, somtime back around 1998.
Somthing to look forward to during the cold commuting days between now
    and then.

    Regards,

    Bookieb.

I have been thinking about this, my birthday is June 11th and it would
make a good birthday ride. I'd be interested in the student
accommodation, I am on the mailing list for the vent but I haven't
looked at the website for a while now. AUK will validate a ride
apparantley not sure what control stamps will be needed. One would get
2 points for a 200km ride. Dunno about climbing points. See if I do
this, then PBP next year and a ride in the USA, which is a real
possibility, I'd be an International Super Randoneur

  3. If you're interested, let me know if there's any local info I can help
    you with.

AAA points calculations involve all sorts of odd mathematics, the phases
of the moon and the current exchange rate of sterling against the
Singapore dollar. The Highs And Looes 200, for example, has 3690m of
climbing and 2.25 AAA points, while the Cambrian 200 has 3000m and 3
    AAA.

<URL:http://www.audax.uk.net/aaa/index.htm> will either tell you more
than you could possibly want to know, or else confuse you even more.

And then there was light and He thought it was good, so He threw the
    receipt away.

Definitely, especially as the equation is missing a right bracket.

The concept is simple. It is a simple calcualtion based on amount of
climbing over a threshold for distance with a fudgefactor built in so
that the threshold (rate of climb) drops as distance increases.

The hard part is measuring the total amount of climbing when road
surfaces in 2D are essentially fractal.

I have just done a bit of research on this, there are some good deals
on rail/ferry to Dun Loaghaire, the online brochure doesn't mention
bikes, does anyone know if it is possible to take bikes on he ferry as
a foot passenger bagged or not ?

I normally ride on to the car deck with it, having checked in as a foot
passenger. The one problem is that you're not supposed to go back to the
foot passenger luggage carousel having ridden off the car deck, so if you
check your bags, you need a bit of charm to technically bend the law.

Obviously you can't lock the bike anywhere on the car deck, so you may feel
a bit unsure about security. For me, it's no big bother.

It's a lovely ride across Anglesey on the A5
