Alex Rims

If you Seach the forum for "alex rims" there are many topics where they have been discussed. They are OK.

Good value, pretty decent. Not top end, but fully functional especially as a trainer wheel.

I've put about 3200 miles on a pair of Alex ALX-290 rims (came stock on an '04 Sequoia Elite). They seemed fine and stayed true during the first 1500 miles. At 1500 miles the rear wheel broke a spoke. Replaced it and trued it and it's been fine since. The front wheel is still riding fine and I've done very little to true it up. I've only repacked the front and rear bearings once during the 3200 miles. Also, the rear cluster makes a lot of noise compared to my 105 or Ultegra hubs.

If you can get them for the right price I'd say they are worth it as a training wheelset. However, at one time you could get Mavic Open Pro rims laced to 9 speed Ultegra hubs for approx $200 at SuperGo, which IMO is a superior wheelset for not a lot of cashola.

During that 3500 miles I've weighed anywhere between 225 lbs to 245 lbs so I'm not exactly a lightweight.

Those Alex 300s are a pretty good knockoff of the Bontrager Race wheels. $150 to my door, no tax.

Cheers guys but I didn't get em in the end, I went for Mavics XM 719 front and rear with Shimano LX hubs and Shimano LX 9 speed Cassette, hope I made the right decision for £80.00Cheers

I'd say your choices of components for a new wheel are excellent. I'm sure you'll be very happy with the 719s. LX hubs are very good and extremely easy to service. Lot's of great miles ahead for you in those wheels 🙂
