Alen Webb

i know he ran well against some of the elite milers in june. well let's see
how he runs against the "big boys" when it truly counts. my opinion is that
he will be fortunate to crack the top 5 in the final

Keep in mind that the guys he pulled away from aren't very good by
international standards, and there's a big difference between pulling away from
a 3:39 guy and staying with a 3:28 guy. Webb had the fastest time in the world
while he raced in Europe, but he hasn't raced there for a while, and his
competition has gotten faster. Webb ran 3:32 in Ostrava and a couple of guys
have run 3:30.

It's going to come down to whether Webb can go another 2 seconds or so faster
than he did a month ago. El Guerrouj is not dominant like he has been, but
Webb has to deal with a new guy (Ramzi), and Lagat and Baala are still there.
To have a medal chance, Webb has to be able to beat two of them.

Second, he will make the finals and come in top 6th but no hardware.

Alan Webb 1,500M Olympic Pursuit Assessment

It's good to see Alan Webb make an extraordinary comeback after a brief
low point after his departure from his high school coach. Come to think
of it, I think Ryun's high school coach Bob Timmons stuck around with him
up until the 1968 Olympics. However, Can Webb win the Gold? Watching the
1,500 meter US Trials, I see the face of a runner (Webb) who has set
aside the past for the better. His form looks good. Too bad Webb doesn't
run more competitive 800's. On the US Olympic heats.

First, in his last heat he had nothing to prove by winning the race only
qualifying, he coasted into a win with Stember (who did'nt qualify for
the team) taking the victory in the heat. Webb feeling the waters, par
se. I thought Stember would've have given Webb some problems however it
didn't happen.

On the Olympic Heats El Guerrouj may not even quify because of his
recently diagnosed asthma.

Yet Webb will surely be taking note of Rashid Ramzi's planned runs prior
to the Olympics. In particular the Mile in London. Which will be a
psychological integral for Ramzi if he breaks the 3:50 barrier.

"Ramzi intends to pass through 1500m in Stockholm (27 July), a Mile in
London (30 July) and a 1500m in Zurich (6 August)"

Also, Ramzi is a former world junior champion and Webb an American Jr.
record holder. Ramzi won with a slower time about (3:42)...Ramzi also has
a PR of 1:46 for the 800. I think Ramzi is making a mistake by stuffing
in too many competitions. The smoking gun on Ramzi is revealed in this
web board for what its worth.

Let the Olympic labs be the judge.

Second,Webb has the speed but does he have the heart? I think so...it
looks like he gets stronger each race. It seems he's setting goals for
each race as opposed to thinking down the line which is more important
than setting records.

Third, coming around that last corner Webb should keep in mind the words
RELAX, CENTER, CONCENTRATE then shifts it into overdrive. (HINT: More 800
repeats with timed 50yds...oxy debited)

Finally, Webb's was recently admitted to the American 3:50 (PR) mile
club. Rightfully so and with all due respect to all the other American
competitors, he is the most talented to win a medal. Also it was
interesting to see Webb play the part of the sacrificial hare, par se.
He'll have plenty of company in the Olympic heats.

Truly it's good see him making a strong comeback. lastly, Webb is 21 and
Ramzi is 23, I think Webb has the mental capacity to pull a medal off
perhaps the gold. Which would be a great prelude to the American Metric
Mile and Mile records. Look out Steve Scott🙂
