I was watching a show on Fit tv and saw how a nutrionist told a patient that if he had alcohol even once during the week, he would not lose weight. Is there any truth to this??
With all the [censored] out there being disseminated by the atkins fanatics and the likes, I just dont know what or who to believe.
I am a believer of the calorie intake- calories burned deficit. Anyone has any input on this?

Yeah, my input is:
It certainly wont help you lose weight - BUTWhats the point of doing all that training if you can't sit down with your mates and have a nice cold beer in the evening sun??
Lifes too short.
Happy cycling,
Goldfishboy....

I actually promise that it is possible to drink and lose weight at the same time. Alcohol can put on the pounds fast. However, when I started endurance training (at the time it was all running and weights), I lost over 35 pounds in about 8 months. I doubt if there was ever a week I didn't indulge in a few cold ones or a bottle of red wine.

Dude!
I drink beer every nite, Have to, it's a law.
I also work like a dog all day and ride for as long as I can squeeze into my schedule in the evenings; and what with a wife and 2&1/2 year old, that ain't much.
I am 5'9" and usually weigh between 145 and 150.
The ONLY way I can keep at this weight is by drinking, every day, a BIG concoction of orange juice, apple juice, frozen strawberries and bananas, and this Weight Gain 3750 whey protein powder.
I figure the mess I mix up in the blender runs around 1500 calories.
Believe me, if you get your activity up, you can eat a COW every nite and pound at LEAST a 6-pack and still keep your weight down.
I'm not a doctor though, I only play one on this board.

pffff... Yes you will gain weight if you drink and do nothing else. But if you drink and exercise, IT'S ALL GOOD.
People are sooo 'health crazed' that people say crazy things.Beer is good and so is cycling. Just don't combine them..

However, if this was a thread on abs, I'd recommend you do leg raises where you lie with your head and back on the ground and slowly lift your legs.

The nutritionist is wrong. If you work out enough, you can eat a horse a day! Seriously, when I was doing 12 hours of hard training per week, I ate something every 20-30 minutes throughout the day and never gained weight.
However, I long ago read of a study that showed that drinking 2-3 beers per day, almost every day, will cause your body's ability to metabolize fat to decline by about 2/3s!

The problem with alcohol is it is an energy source that cannot be stored. When ingested, it takes precedence over everything else as an energy source, and the body has to oxidize it to get rid of it. This being the case, if you like to drink beer while eating, it makes for a bad scenario. The body metabolizes the alcohol for energy and the energy in the meal tends to get stored....as lard.
Also, the presence of alcohol activates the cytochrome P-450 system, which in addition to metabolizing alcohol and other 'toxic' agents, also destroys testosterone.
Here's a neat article on the subject if you want to read more...

Also...
Carbs - 4 Cal/g
Alcohol - 7.1 Cal/g
Fat - 9 Cal/g -
As far as my own personal experience you can lose weight and drink a few 1.5 ounce glasses of whiskey every night if you eat a low fat diet and in my case burn an extra 500 calories a day at the gym. I findit is most effective in the early mornings hours where I spend 65 minutes on the stair climber. Ive lost 4 inches on my waist and am down to a trim 130 on a 5`5 frame. Not bad at 36 years of age.
Of course according to experts, my bodytype is an ectomorph, which means I metabolize calories faster, but, on the down side, its harder for me to build muscle.
I think anyone can maintain or lose weight even if they do consume alcohol, but you have to work all the much harder. And thats not always easy.
Whatever, I dont promote this lifestyle, you will obviously reap more benefits if you don`t drink. -

I am a believer of the calorie intake- calories burned deficit. Anyone has any input on this?As an Atkins fanatic who actually was one of Dr. Atkins patients... what I'm about to say pertains only to someone on the Atkins regimen... According to Dr. Atkins, alcohol metablolized in your system like a sugar and therefore was virtually the same as eating a candy bar in terms of upsetting the Atkins diet. If you are not following the Atkins regimen then it's a whole different ball game.

good info, thanks.. I'm wondering though what effect does a beer with dinner really have. talking one or two not six.
For original poster, moderate drinking is compatible with training if you are not trying for pro level performance but mostly for life satisfaction. Last year I rode myself back into shape, including taking two and a half hour rides followed by two thick beer brats and two beers with a side of salad and pasta. Life was good, I gained muscle and lost 15ish pounds over the summer.
If I were training to win races I'd have to curb that back a bit..
-
Obiously, it hurts your diet, but with that said......
I've lost 3 belt sizes over the past year and thats with being 5'10 and 168lbs, now around 155lbs, lots of muscle. I've lost a lot of fat and drink like a madman most of the year. It's complete bs that you can't lose weight while drinking. You just can't drink and sit on your ass and eat like [censored]. Big suprise, no?

You could compare beer to other foods by checking the nutritional info - check it out here:

I am a believer of the calorie intake- calories burned deficit. Anyone has any input on this? Its not true, I don't drink much alcohol at all (for health reasons), BUT a few times a year I do have a drink when we go out. I still lost over 100 lbs in the last couple years despite that. The key is MODERATION.
BTW good to see you are against the Atkin$ fanatics!

+1 to that. Drinking alcohol once a week isn't going to have a major effect on weight loss - there just aren't enough calories in the alcohol in a night of drinking to make a substantial difference. And besides... you've gotta get s#itty hammered sometimes - it's a fundamental human need, I think it goes water, food, poo, sex, alcohol, shelter in order of importance if I'm remembering correctly.
