aksium wheels

Saw the new Mavic Aksium wheels, and don't see much buzz about them. I examined them, and they are not double socketed like Open pros. They look like MA-3's, is that going to be an issue? They have them priced lower than the MA-3's, there has to be a catch here.

Saw the new Mavic Aksium wheels, and don't see much buzz about them. I
examined them, and they are not double socketed like Open pros. They look
like MA-3's, is that going to be an issue? They have them priced lower than
the MA-3's, there has to be a catch here.

Low end wheel based on the new OpenSport rim with really crappy hubs.
We looked at them and see that we can still build a wheelset with 105
or Velcoe hubs, Open Sport rims and DT 14/15 spokes for less $...MUCH
better hubs...

Don't know but what do these do that a Centaur hubset, DT spokes and a
rim, not do? Besides cost more and use unique, not supported parts?

In Copenhagen, Denmark, a Fulcrum R5 wheelset costs 1500kr. Shimano
550 or Campy Vento is arround 1100kr.
The cheapest Centauer hubset costs 1250kr, add 600kr for a pair of
OpenPro, 200kr for Sapim Race spokes, and at least 400kr for
workmans costs = at least 2150kr for a wheelset.

Yow, that's not good! What happens if you do BREAK a spoke or damage a rim?
Those thing do happen! Hopefully, your LBS still knows how to build a rim
and can get replacement spokes, rims and hubs....

There is more money to be made selling unserviceable prebuilt wheels than
regular wheels. Also, building wheels is a skill that some mechanics can't
seem to master.
