  1. In this day and age of, of , well cutbacks and economy measures have you had
a positive experience on an airline lately?

Last night returning from my favorite smokehouse in Bentonville AR. the
night before I caught the late flight from DFW to Beautiful Downtown
    Burbank.

I asked for and receive an upgrade to first - not bad.

After an imitation Martini (Vodka Rocks) there came a salad with romaine
halved cherry tomatoes, artichoke hearts, kalamata olives, sliced mushrooms
and a nice vinaigrette I chose to have a piece of focaccia in place of the
wheat roll. Later their "Low Carb Brisket" Not bad for several slices of
tender but well done brisket in a flavorful sauce and mashed cauliflower
with cheese. Not great but acceptable and filling along with some red wine.

Now the best part - Hagen Das vanilla ice cream with your choice of : Hot
Fudge, butterscotch, whipped cream, strawberries, or chopped nuts. I had
all of the above except for the butterscotch and a coffee with a shot of
    cognac.

An acceptable (not great) end to a horrid day. The fact that I had forgotten
to eat that day may have had something to do with my perception.

I'll add a good coach experience. Lufthansa LAX to Frankfurt and back.
Decent standard-issue coach food, but really good coffee and unlimited
free booze. I speak good German, and nobody else in our party spoke it
at all, so I could flirt with the flight attendants in front of my
wife and our church choir without anybody catching on.

That sounds like the ONLY way to fly, but you were upgraded.
Would the meal have been worth paying the first class fare?

I'll agree that Lufthansa does very well by its passengers
on those flights, but the ground personnel can be very crusty
and unaccomodating. Our first experience with Frankfurt
ground crews 10 yrs. ago included one lady we still refer to
as "Helga, the Baggage Security Nazi".

Airline food would be much better if they stuck to cold dishes (salads,
cold cuts, sandwiches, sushi, etc.) or food that reheats well (like the
braised brisket you had, or other stews and braises). But they insist
on serving reheated stir-fries or grilled meat/chicken.

Skip the airline food if possible and pick up sandwiches on the way to
    the airport.

It takes a real brave person to eat sushi offered by any US carrier.

    I thought milk/cream was on the no-no list (?)... aren't
you're allowed 30 to 55 carbs per day? Ice cream is at
    least 16.

I made the mistake of paying money for a meal in coach class on "Ted"
(United's answer to Jetblue and Southwest) last month. Puny portion for
the price. Next time I pack some real goodies.

Well I hope that the LH stews were somewhat attractive and acted in a
professional manner...stews with such characteristics are increasingly rare
    on US carriers.

Screw the food, I just want a relatively professional cabin staff when I
    fly.

What is it with US airlines and their elderly and rude stews? Delta and
Northwest are the very worst offenders that I've seen. And whatever
happened to the concept of height - weight correlation? I've seen plenty of
fat stews - who on earth wants to look at a fat stew? Fat people are tiring
enough to look out, but to be working for an airline? These gals make flyig
on US carriers a distinctly dreary experience. Some of these girls should
have been put out to pasture long ago but heck, the pasture wouldn't even
    have them...

I like the "Singapore Girl" stewardesses on Singapore Airlines - they are
quiet, attractive, effecient and deferential. No fat mouthy scowling cabin
    staff on SQ!

American used to have good box snacks, but I heard they are getting rid
of all food on flights. United has an awesome cookie-type thing -
almost a biscotti - I don't know what it is, but it is to die for.
they come two in a package, rectangular about 1 in. X 3 in. - never
enough. The rest of United's food is pretty sucky. They try to make
you buy their meals for $10 and they look pretty crappy.

SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) generally has quite good food. And the
food on KAL (Korean Airlines) was excellent. Of course, sitting in
business class helps too, I'm sure.

The best airline food I ever had was cold poached salmon, served with sour
cream, fresh dill, fresh lemon, and I can't remember what else. Really
good. It was about 10 years ago -- I had a new job, and my first assignment
was to fly out to San Diego w/ my boss and his boss. As a result of buying
my ticket at the last minute, I paid full fare (well, the FAA paid, not me)
and somehow I ended up in first class with Lyle Lovett and some of his
entourage. Not sure what Lyle had for lunch that day, but he very kindly
helped me retrieve my bag from the overhead compartment upon deplaning.

Luckily, my new bosses were pretty cheerful about the whole thing. Not my
fault they had to sit in coach.

Sometimes you just have to say - screw the carbs - aside from that I needed
the sugar boost - the day started at 4:00 AM Bentonville time then ended at
11:30 PM California time. I ain't as young as I used to be.
