  1. Instead of pulling down one of my priceless (to me) road bikes I unhook the
Atala cross bike, pump the tires up to 65 psi and ride out and around on the
bay trail. One section goes past the police pistol range and I always feel
better when I'm out of range. You never know when that local amateur who I
informed on for breaking so many forks is liable to be out there qualifying
    again.

You know, riding slow in a 52-24 on dirt (actually mud today) is a hell of a
lot less stressful than trying to turn out 25 miles during commute hour
    traffic.

While I'm riding I always picture Henry falling further and further behind.
    Just like in real life.

Given the reality of how well cops shoot, and are trained, extreme
    caution is a good thing.

Riding a Cross bike or highbred on trails is a ton of fun and a
challenge, but you've gotta love the draft from semis sucking you down
the road until you get splatted.

Just don't see you leaving Henry in the dust.
Know how you feel about most of the bikes though. I've got one road
bike that I've settled in on as a winter bike, but still can't bring
myself to expose it to road salt.
Glad your getting out and having fun. Me too, finally gotten back in
the gym and for the first time in ten years nothing feels like it needs
immediate surgery. Gotta give big props to my surgeons. The repaired
[censored] feels as good, or better than the other stuff. People like Brian,
and Bruce who've really been unable to do what they love for a decent
period of time get it. You're not "you" when you are physically unable
to do what you know you should be able to and just can't. Life sucks.
Right now I feel really good for the first time in a long time and am
looking forward to not having to worry about snapping frame tubes, or
being harpooned since this is New England, when I ditch some more
    blubber.
Keep riding, and taking care of those classics.

    Tom,

How old is that Atala? I remember them in the sixties (when I raced in New
York) but have not seen them since. Are they still around?

    Well spoken, lads,

And here I thought I was the only one. I've been rotating 'cross bikes on
the local trails so I only have to do "bike laundry" once a week. Riding
the old Eurocross through the goo sure beats dodging Escalades, F-350s and
the heaps of sand, broken bottles and defunct auto parts that get swept
    into the roadside shoulder.

The only downside is the occasional dog-walker with a retractable lead
that lets human go right while dog goes left. But with a little practice
you can treat them as mobile barricades and get a little running in.
Hurdle more than two of the silly sods per lap and the UCI writes you up,
    though.

    Cheers,

If Brian doesn't get riding again pretty soon he's going to drive us all
crazy. Maybe we ought to chip in and buy him a recumbent?

Mine is circa '86 or so. It's screaming lime yellow so that let's you know
that it was between '85 and '90 or so.

I don't believe that the real Atala is still in business but no doubt
someone has their brand name and will release another three dozen models of
Bianchi with the Atala logo on it.
