  1. There are a few good bikes in my area.

Let's start with this Raleigh: ($100)
    raleigh grand prix brown road

    Schwinn Continental: ($100)
    Schwinn Continental

    Puch: ($130)
    Puch road bike

So how bout em? Which one is a better buy? Should I look for anything in particular when I go to test ride them?

Here's what the bike will be for:
I am going to be attending college next year. I will be selling my car. The bike will be my main for of transpo. I will be equiping it with as much gear as I can (packs, rear rack, etc). I will also attempt a hill climb with it. 10% grade I believe. Not sure.

Any words of wisdom are greatly appreciated!

  2. FWIW. I would probably choose the PUCH ...

I might consider the RALEIGH ...

I would pass on the particular SCHWINN.

  3. Any specific reasons?

  4. Here's two more!
    A Raleigh for $75:
    RALEIGH TECHNIUM ALUMINUM ROAD BIKE
    Unknown for $70

  5. i would choose the puch one.in my opinion, when you buy a bike ,the first feeling is the most important,,then the spec goes next.

Well, all three should be reliable -- or, reliable enough -- for getting to campus & back ...

I presume you want to ride the bikes AS-IS, except for tires + minor maintenance issues.

As pictured, I reckon the particular Schwinn will weigh about 35+ pounds. It isn't clear from the picture whether it has an "American" bottom bracket or an English bottom bracket, but because of the Huret rear derailleur, I'm going to guess that it old enough to have an American BB. The weight could become tedious if you have to lug the bike UP-and-DOWN stairs every day.

The Raleigh might be okay ... some Raleighs from the 70s still had some marginal (i.e., French manufactured) components ... and, it isn't clear from the picture or description what components are on the particular bike.

Although the PUCH costs more, up front, it appears to be in ready-to-ride condition (other than the tires, as indicated by the seller). The Puch probably has a nice enough frame that if-and-when you are inclined to selling it, you will get close to the same amount of money you paid for it (haggle, and see if the seller will take $100-or-less) unless you trash the bike OR if you are inclined to upgrading it, it will be easy-enough to do.

The RALEIGH TECHNIUM has the advantage of being less expensive AND (if it is what YOU are looking for) 26" wheels/tires ... so, the Technium would be a good choice, too. There ARE advantages to FLAT bars if you are riding short distances of only a couple of miles in an area where you have to stop at almost every corner with a stop light.

  7. The Puch is what caught my eye before anyways. I will be taking a look at this bike soon. However, I just had to use my "bicycle fund" to fix the car that I am trying to sell. >.<

  8. The frame on the Raleigh Grand Prix looks bent, like it was run head on into something large and immovable.

The Puch looks most ready to ride as is, and it's a pretty good bike. Good luck with it.

Thank you. I'm looking to get the Puch and a Next MTB for winter. The Next is only $25.

Thanks all for your advice! My instincts were correct for once! Haha
