  1. I had an expensive bicycle stolen from a parking facility in downtown San Francisco. The insurance claims people insisted they had no liability. I have subsequently read various commentaries about this kind of situation that indicate that the garage is liable under California law.

Can anybody give me advice on how I should continue to press my claim?

  2. You may try your 'home owners' insurance, it's worth a shot.

See this link from Velonews - it discusses exactly this problem. It wasn't in response to a question from you, was it?

  4. It was this article that made me think of pursuing the issue again.

  5. Go for it. You may need a lawyer to push your claim through, but as long as you paid for parking, you should be covered by the parking garage's insurance.

Use an insurance broker, we are more expert than lawyers....
If you have Home Insurance - Accidental damage, should be covered as contents away from home.
If you have stock standard home insurance, wont be covered.

    The carpark has insurance.
If has purchased Burglary cover-customers contents, is covered under this. Likely they might not have purchased this (costly).

Failing all that, is definitely a liability claim for which they are covered.
There is negligence (they could have done many things to prevent theft, eg more security, alarms, guards etc) so you have a case. It is a property damage liability issue - "loss or damage to tangible assets" (this includes theft).
Write to them asking for them to claim under their liability section. Their excess will be minimal ($200 or so). Offer to pay it yourself if need be. Failing all that, get an insurance broker to write formally requesting this, start out with nice letters then move on to threatening to sue letters and youl get there. good luck.
