    hi,

    i have a few questions regarding upgrading broken parts on a cheap mtb i brought, i use it mainly for xc and really enjoy light downhill riding.

    the frame is a dual suspension which i paid a nominal amount for this being the problem i have already had to replace the rear hub axle/spindle twice and its bent again, it currently has a 6sp freewheel hub with a sunrace mech, is it possible to buy a new wheel with say shimano hubs and 7 speed freewheel i.e will the mech be ok with the extra cog and will it fit in the rear dropouts?

    the other thing is the bottom bracket bearings are noisy they are non sealed type is is possible to fit a sealed shimano unit instead? if it is can i keep the square drive crank arms? also will changing the front chainset make the bike easier to ride up the hills the smallest cog has 28teeth, if so will i need a new chain?

    i dont have the money to buy a new bike with better original parts, but buying parts is a more affordable option for me.

    You should be able to upgrade to a sealed BB with square cranks, something like a Shimano UN-52. (on sale now from Nashbar $15)

    I wouldn't spend any more cash on upgrades.

    I agree. Save your money and get another bike. Have a look at the 2nd hand market.

    It depends on how much you spendt on your bike you have now. If it has a good frame than spend money on better parts. If it has a crappy frame than save your money. Your new rear wheel should fit even with an extra cog. I did the same thing to one of my mountain bikes.

    thanks for the advice someone who didnt automatically say get a new bike, if that was an option i wouldnt be asking on here would i.

    the frame is ok not a brand name but what makes a good frame does it have to be a marin or whatever is good these days, if i get all good parts that i want build a bike to my spec i can transfer the parts onto a new frame if i ever break my frame.

    ive fitted the wheel it works fine just gotta get a 7 speed shifter, what do u think of the megarange freewheels?

    Spin-on freewheel or freehub with cassette?

    Since you've already had to replace two rear axles you would be much better off with a freehub + cassette rear wheel. The benefit is the position of the drive side hub bearing which will eliminate or at least greatly reduce bent axles.

    unfortunately its a spin on freewheel but my friend who rides with me has no problem with bent/broken axles/spindles and his bike is similar spec.

    im assuming ill need a new longer chain for this megarange freewheel if i decide to buy it, any pointers on what length or brand.
