Advice for Flat Bar Road Bikes

I'd suggest get a bike designed for flat bars or the geometry may be
wrong. And if you ant to fit tri-bars to such a bike then the geometry
*will* be wrong. Speedlite Cycles in Maylands always have a few flat
bar road bikes in stock...

I found tri bars on my mountain bike to be remarkably comfortable.

I believe that a well designed flat bar road bike will have a longer top
tube than a classic drop bar roadie to give you the correct reach. Tri bars
would be too long on the flat bars, but you could simply get some L-shaped
MTB bar-ends and mount them inboard of your grips to give a similar position
for tucking in.

I do not understand the details but you seem to have to change the
brakes (and gear changers?) when doing this. There seem to be plenty of
good hybrids around or you could talk to a dealer about changing the
Fuji tourer. Baum? have an ad in the latest Australian cyclist. If the
budget stretches look at St john's cycles in the UK.
I am forced to ride a flat bar (prefer drops) so can see both sides of
the argument!

Avanti Blade Sport, or Giant CRX 2, 3 or 4. Anyone have any opinions on
these bikes?

I bought a Giant CRX3 from Cyclerama in Cannington a couple of weeks ago.
I've shopped there for years and always get a good price. If you go there
tell Jeff or Joe I sent you!

The Giant seems OK so far, but having XT and XTR stuff on my MTBs has
spoiled me. The shifts on the CRX3 feel clunky and slow in comparison. The
other thing I didn't do my homework prpoerly on (and still haven't) is that
the Giant uses dedicated shifters for the chainrings. That means I can't
whack on the XT shifters I have in the shed to replace the CRX3 shifters.
You might consider that when looking around too. I don't know if other flat
bar roadies use a similar setup.

I did look at a couple of Merida falt-bar roadies at Mercer Cycles in Freo
(opposite the hospital) that seemed pretty good at a decent price too.

See my recent post on "RR:new red puppy" thread. I almsot got a flat bar
but was talked around to a road bike. Not that there is anything wrong with
flatties, just a few points to consider such as chainstay length and bar
position comfort. I was thinking of a CRX 1 or 2 and almost got one, but
now I've changed my mind. They look like really nice bikes.
