Adjusting Front Derailleur?

  1. Having trouble engaging the smallest cog on the front
    chainring - rear mech all lined up and working fine. My bike
    has a Tiagra groupset and I would just appreciate it of
    someone knew which of the screws on this particular rig will
    adjust the low gear limit? Sheldon's page assumes, with
    caution, it's the one nearest to the frame but sod's
    law.....so I want to be sure.

    Also, looking down on the screws from the saddle is it a
    clock or anti clock turn to 'encourage' the mech towards the
    frame and therefore the chain in the lowest cog?

    For info my bike is a Giant FCR2.

    I have read other threads on the subject but am still a
    bit unsure.

    Instructions for the particular model of derailleur, though
    for the limit screws this shouldn't matter.

    I don't know the answer since I don't have a Tiagra mech.
    But if the mech allows you to see the mechanincs of what is
    happening try engaging your shifters into small cog, and see
    which of the two screws the mechanism is resting against.
    Then work on the principle that if you withdraw this screw
    away from the mech then it will allow more movement. If you
    can't see the whole action, maybe you can see which screw is
    in contact when the big ring is engaged? If this is the case
    then you now need the OTHER screw.

    There may also be a letter L (low) by the required screw
    (compared with H for high).

    I think "encourage" is the wrong word here. "Allow" would
    be a better choice since this screw determines how much
    the spring can relax and this pull the mech towards the
    small ring.

    Sorry I can't give a specific answer but hope this
    helps anyway.

    This may not be the *easiest* way to check, but it should
    sort your gears out nicely (I'm happy to be corrected by
    anyone more expert than me).

    Loosen the cable, so the mech springs into its 'lowest'
    position. Then you can try fiddling with either screw and
    see which one makes the mech move - this is the screw you're
    after. Adjust this screw so that the mech is in the right
    position for when the chain is on the small chainwheel. Then
    pull the cable as tight as you can (make sure the shifter is
    in the right position first) and tighten it up (you might
    want a beautiful assistant on hand to pull the cable for you
    while you tighten). Then shift up to the big chainring and
    adjust the other screw accordingly.

    Another point worth bearing in mind - I recently improved
    the performance of my front mech by adjusting its position
    to be much closer to the big chainwheel (about 1mm clearance
    - it was more like 5mm before). Of course, this is not an
    option if you have a braze-on mech.

    with pliers), then there will be lots of scope to tighten
    cable with adjuster afterwards.

    It is, braze-on mechs aren't fixed in one position. The brazed-
    on bracket has a curved slot on which the mech can be
    adjusted up and down and in and out... a bit (usually enough
    to get mech close to big ring).

    Shimano have a spec for this measurement, it is 0 - 0.5mm
