Adjusting bearings for weather?

  1. A New York Times Sports "Play" magazine (June) was just handed to me,
    opened to "Primp My Ride" on page 36.

    A "light, yet stiff and efficient" bicycle sports handlebars that
    weigh "200 grams (less than racing helmet) and are made of carbon
    fiber, which absorbs vibrations for smooth rides" and pedals whose
    "spring-tension adjustment allow you to fine-tune the amount of effort
    to clip in or out," plus a saddle that "has more flexibility and
    surface area than standard models, making for a more comfortable
    ride."

    All that was familiar, if open to debate.

    But what about these wheels and their bearings?

    "The latest, lightest wheels available are the ultralight (1,485 grams
    per pair) and ultrastiff Ksyrium ES, from Mavic. The braking surfaces
    are milled for smoother stopping, and the sealed cartridge bearings
    can be adjusted for the weather."

    Which way do you adjust your wheel bearings for the weather?

    You take the seals off for the summer for less friction, and put them back
    on in the winter for better sealage.

    sealed cartridge bearings are removable and microadjustable,
    allowing yout to easily and quickly adjust your wheels according to
    performance goals; high precision adjustment for maximum fluidity,
    or set tighter for all-weather rides.

    Sifting through the triplemarketingspeak of that, I think they're
    saying that the racers can set the hubs up with zero preload to
    minimize drag, while ordinary daily users would probably want to put
    just a touch of preload on the bearings to keep them from going sloppy
    in use.

    This is one of the times that I'm glad my budget does not support the
    acquisition of such exotica.

    In other words, you adjust them for weather you want them to spin freely
    or not.

  12. as an ordinary user who finds exacting pedal and hub preload beyond his
    mechanical aptitude -
    reviews of products by venue not precisely in the biz getting a review
    are entertaining and sometimes illuminating in that the view is
    probabbbbly not yours but if youn try to look at it from THEIR point of
    view rather than YOURN point of view
    then maybe you can chalk today down as learning somethin new
    rather than [censored] about THEIR point of view

    What you do.
    1) Carefully put the entire bike into the workstand, release both QRs,
    take the wheels off the bicycle, hang them up and put decent wheels
    onto the bike. Adjust brakes and check ders and go ride.

    2) after the ride, take some pictures of the removed Mavic Cry-sirium
    wheels and put them on ebay for some other sucker to use, maintain,
    break and throw away.

    Works in winter or summer!!
