Adjustable stem - tightening?

  1. My new Carrera Subway 7 has a riser stem, ie.
    the type which can be pointed up or down.
    It is quite short - a slightly longer one would be good, but I digress.

    The two hex-headed bolts which fasten the stem don't seem to tighten
    enough. I've tried one allen key in each and tightening them, but they
    seem to work loose, but only slightly. The stem is in no danger of falling
    down, but the bars have a few mm of movement side to side.
    No criticism of the manufacturers is intended here.

    Any ideas on how to deal with this? Maybe some plain or shakeproof washers
    are needed?
    I don't have a brand for the stem.

    If the bike's new, have the seller replace the stem.

    I would. This isn't safe to ride like that.

    Assuming that you are tightening each bolt up evenly (ie not one first all the
    way and then the other) there are two options

    1) You have the wrong width handlebar for the stem or
    2) The stem is a Friday afternoon special.

    Either is bad. Take it back to the shop you got it from and get them to
    sort it out.

  4. Is it 1 1/8th" stem on a 1" steerer? Shop will replace or a shim may be
    missing. I believe that most stems are now 1 1/8".

    Thanks for the reply.
    The handlebar itself fits snugly in the stem.
    The bolts I'm referring to are opposing each other horizontally, and
    clamp the stem when it adjusts in angle up and down.

    That's what I understood you to mean. Some of these items have
    graduations or notches and it may be you aren't fitting the tightening
    thingies into these notches properly. But I still say, take it back and
    have it replaced. Any looseness in the bar area is dangerous.

  7. If it's like mine, there is a well-hidden third allen-head bolt
    lower-front (angled-up), that actually tightens the stem in the chosen
    position.
