NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. cycling champion Adham Sbeih became the first American athlete to be banned for EPO when he was given a two-year suspension on Thursday.
Sbeih tested positive at the U.S. cycling federation elite track nationals on August 26. The 30-year-old is national champion in the 4,000 meters individual pursuit.
"This decision should reassure all clean athletes that USADA (United States Anti-Doping Agency) and science are on their side, and that we are making significant strides through research and the application of science to eliminate drug use from sport," said Terry Madden, USADA's chief executive officer in a statement.
Sbeih won the individual pursuit and team pursuit at the 2003 national championships but will now be stripped of those victories.
EPO is a synthetic hormone that stimulates the body's production of red blood cells, increasing oxygen transport and aerobic power. The drug has been at the center of several doping scandals in cycling.

What happens to the medals for the other members of his team pursuit squad?
Are they also stripped of their victory because they benefitted from Sbeih's juiced performance, or are they innocent victims that should be allowed to keep their winning credentials?

EPO is not a synthetic hormone it is the real thing. Some rhEPO's are almost completely identical to that manufactured by your body but have a somewhat different charge so can be identified.
Yeah, but the pee test is good for about 3 days. Who takes EPO 3 days before competition? Unless of course he took that "other" EPO, Darbepoetin Alfa. I still can't believe these guys keep busted. I was also surprised to hear Manzano talk about nandrolone use in the winter, because that stuff is detectable for 18 months. But then again, I don't get paid to figure out how to beat the tests.

How come when an American gets busted for doping, we all cry foul, and that it must be a mistake. And then when a Euro pro gets pinched for it, we always knew that they were doping anyway. Why the dichotomy? Isn't a cheater a cheater? If Adam Sbeih wasn't doping; how did he end up with rEPO in his system? Any answers for that one?

Is my newsreader dropping posts? I haven't heard anyone here claiming Adham was clean. He got busted. He was unlucky.
I won't claim he was clean. But in his interview with Velonews I thought one venue of defense they were going to use was that he was of Arab descent and the baseline testing was only done with Caucasians, and that did not appear in the summary.

The nandrolone was sort of a giveaway don't you think? All of the real dummies have these myths about what you can get away with and what you can't. They've just been lucky and not tested at the right times.

You seem to have quoted all of the posting. Where did anyone cry foul? Duhhhhhhhh.

Because there is a naive hope that U.S. racing is clean simply because the stakes aren't high enough to justify it. (ergo, max salary for US pro = <$100k, max salary for Euro pro >4M).

Sorry I wasn't more clear in a previous post, but I wasn't quoting any previous post, but just kind of "wondering aloud". I had read a letter somewhere either on Cyclingnews.com or Velonews, that someone had written in and made the usual comments, "I know Adam, and he would never do something like that." sort of thing. Same as people made for Monniger, same for Amber Neben last year. I was just trying to say that American supporters of cycling seem to go out on a limb when one of our own get busted, but always just assume that the Euros are doing it, and snicker and point fingers when they get busted. I was just maybe dangerously generalizing there in my previous post.

"Maybe"?

OK, so I was. I admit it. But you do know what I'm talking about. Right?
Moninger isn't the sort of guy to dope. And if he were do you suppose he'd chose one of the things most easily found in a doping test?
