Yes, but there exist single sided axles that aren't that large. I'm pretty sure the the ones on my U+2 tandem trailer, for example, are smaller than the largest through axles for downhill use. (Though admittedly the U+2 isn't really a bike, and most of the single hubs I've seen or seen photos of have been on trikes.)
Anyone remember the Morris 1100 which used to regularly shed a front wheel axle?
1100s rusted into fragments far too quickly to do anything like shed axles "regularly"... ;-/

No pocket money to keep as such I was only 4 and a bit. Mother and others from the queue helped gather up the coins from the road which was a lot quieter then. I picked up a few from the gutter. They were then given back to the Conductor. He gave me a 3d bit back and suggested that it was for an Ice cream which was duly spent in the long gone Mylos (sp ) Ice cream parlour.
