Long time lurker here to say I just lost a $500.00 bet to some guy that I
watched do 150lbs 150 times strict with feet flat on the ground in FRONT of
the "cheat" floor member, the strap gripped behind his neck and his nose
touching the plastic plug in the front support each and every rep (his chin
was well below his thighs). This guy looked like nothing and I was sure he
was a complete [censored] artist. He claimed to never lift weights and only
would do exercises by rope wrestling his 5 dogs! Is there anybody here that
can do this? How long would it take to train to do this? Is there a trick to
this? This [censored] is really bugging the heck out of me.....thanx.

Sounds like you just lost a bet to either:
a: a retired member of circque du soleil
b: a retired member of the french gymnastics team
c: some dude who has some freakish core strength.

Ouch. 500 bucks - did you pay him? That's kind of an interesting concept
though -a gym hustler. You're probably not the first one he's pulled that
on. -
I paid him.....never thought he could do even 1 rep. He is about 5'11" maybe
215lbs. Met him in a club I occasionally bounce at and we got into the usual
daygig discussion and he said alot of gymrats, ex-military and a few second
string football players all gassed badly at what he did. I am a little
unclear on the specifics but he said he was a hydraulic handsaw operator
that cut the top off of concrete piles so they could lay bridge deck across
them. I guess they have to do this off a bucket lift that is sitting on a
barge or something. He said the only other exercise he did was rope
wrestling his 5 dogs. All I know is that I would have bet my left nut it
couldn't be done by anybody and he did it like clockwork. I felt more than a
little weird about the whole deal.... -

I'm amazed that you are the only one to come to that conclusion, as it
is the first thing that occurred to me.The whiff of the bull droppings is very pungent!! ;o)

the "cheat" floor member,
150 lb on a cable pull down ?? How do you know it was 150 lbs ? How
many pulleys ?? There's a cable machine at my gym that says a 160
pounds but is no where close. There are so many pulleys on the damn
thing it's more like 50 lbs. -

stack, NO compound mechanism. It's 150lbs...and I couldn't do it following
his form ONCE. The only rep I completed was the fart that let lose when I
tried to do it. I am not the Hulk but I have been lifting weights for 25
years and have been an union ironworker for 20. He wasn't at the bar
thursday or sunday but this woman I have seen him talking with was and she
said he really has 5 dogs all rescued pitbull/pitbull mixes and he plays tug
of war with them constantly. Maybe I can get him to show the tool he uses to
cut the concrete piles. I don't know what else to say....I lost the money. -

money.Possibly there are some engineering types that can explain it better
but EACH pulley will releive some of the weight and reduce the actual
effect of the weight so that although you are moving 150lbs you are
doing less work to move that then if you picked up 150 lbs off the
floor. -
I know what 150lbs feels like. I can put up some decent weight. I don't get
bouncing gigs because of my nice teeth and sparkling personality. -

What you *feel* is irrelevant. Just because the little rack says 150lbs
doesn't mean anything either. BTW, where are you bouncing ?? The local
Bingo hall ? You just said you couldn't do a 150 lb crunch...I wouldn't
be bragging about being all that when you can't do a single 150 lb
crunch.... -
I can crunch 150lbs .......this guy was bringing his chin 3-4 inches below
his knees while holding the strap in a double closed fist directly behind
his neck. I bounce at a danceclub in the off season and a gentleman's club
during the summer while still putting in 7+2ot weekdays as an ironworker. I
never bragged about being all that....I just wanted to know if anyone here
was aware of a gimmick, a training method or whether anyone here could do
this feat. If you can't respond constructively [censored]. -

I did respond constructively yet you arbitrarily dismissed my
explanation. Perhaps he can crunch like that because he is elastic
man...or perhaps it's not quite the feat you think it is just because
you can't do it. There are plenty of things I can't do...doesn't
necessarily make them amazing feats when someone else can do them. -

but EACH pulley will releive some of the weight and reduce the actual
effect of the weight so that although you are moving 150lbs you are
doing less work to move that then if you picked up 150 lbs off the
floor.(A) If the cable is anchored at the top, running through a pulley on the
weight stack, through a pulley up top, down to the bar/rope, then the
mechanical advantage of the system is 2:1.(B) If the cable is anchored on the bottom pulley, running through a pulley
up top, through the pulley on the weight stack, through another pulley up
top, down to the bar/rope, then the mechanical advantage is 3:1.Assuming from the statement "2 equal diameter pulleys," (A) applies.
Ignoring friction, if the weight plates are truly 150#, then the force
required to lift those plates would be 75#. The plates could actually be
300# and marked 150#. The manufacturer could've already taken into account
the mechanical advantage of the pulleys. The easiest way to tell is to
attach a 25# weight to the handle hook and set the weights to 25#. If it
comes close to balancing out, there ya go. -
The cable isn't anchored anywhere.....it is attached directly to the guide
pin running thru the weight stack up to a live pulley directly above it then
over to a rigid pulley at the same altitude in the bench back rest
stock.....I borrowed a deer hunting scale and stuck it in between the cable
clip and the strap and pulled 5 times here are the results:
152.3lbs,152.1lbs,151.9lbs,152.0lbs,151.9lbs. -

"redirectional pulleys." The extra 2# you're seeing with the scale are most
likely from friction. -

there is no mechanical advantage gained and the lift will be a
deadweight of + or 150 lbs. -

AND he took a deer scale into the gym to get the weight...seems even

said, set the weight to 25 lbs and stick a 25lb plate on the handle to
see what happens.
