What I particularly like is that for someone like me who's not terribly
technically minded their service is so easy to use. I use the Java
upload facility and usually upload a folder at a time rather than
individual photos. In fact, it's often easier to upload a complete
folder and then delete the unwanted ones later. I've used their
printing service as well, and that's excellent.

I've struggled with Java. I've only got a very early version and this won't
automatically update (Shades of the Anquet MM position). When I do a manual
I get lost with the instructions - my eyes glaze over when those three
letter file extensions litter the screen. I uploaded all the photos one by
one, having a rest day on Sunday! Fortunately one of my customers has just
redesigned battlefield communications for our main tank force, and says that
Java is "simple". He owes me a favour, so I'll let him bumble about with it.

I looked at Jalbum.net before deciding on fotopic. In there is a means of
checking which version of Java is on my PC. When I ran this I was told I had
version 1.0, and despite my machine only being some 2 years old, I was told
that the latest version is already 5.0. I was offered the chance to upgrade,
which I did THREE times (Thank god for restart points), but the upgrade
simply wouldn't take.
I then signed up with fotopic, and yes, there is a Java option. When I click
on this simply got a smallish blank screen. I presumed the Java
instructions were on here, but it wouldn't enlarge to let me see anything.
So, I went back to Jalbum, where there was a facility for manual ugrade of
Java. I started this, and then started getting all sorts of warnings about
what downloads would do to various files, all with different three letter
extensions. At this stage I ran away - when I drive a car I don't want to
look under the bonnet, and similarly I don't want to be a computer mechanic.
I use the not Java method, and upload a max 10 photos at a time. With over
300 now downloaded this took some time!
As I mentioned I have a tame mechanic who will sort it out eventually. Why
is upgrading a computer programme always so difficult? Took me two hours
today to update my anti virus because it would only do what was programmed
into it, and wouldn't let me move on. As I said it's the MM/Anquet position.
Software writers seem to want you to buy the whole new package every year
paying far more than you need, rather than simply updating what you already
have, and which, in most cases, is working perfectly adequately. I'm
surprised G. Brown doesn't use a similar method for his tax regime, it's a
foolproof way of taking money off the punters.
