I'd say that I average one screaming episode every couple of months when some motorist attempts to make me their passenger. Today I had two within twenty minutes. In the first, I'm riding through a suburban development, and a woman in a convertible comes to a stop on the cross-street to my left. I have the right-of-way straight through, and there's nothing on my right except houses and driveways. She starts coming out as I approach, and instead of turning right (or even left) as I'm assuming she will, she heads straight across the road in front of me. I'm now skidding and screaming at her, and she stops in time to give me about three feet of road left in front of her to get by.
"I'm just trying to get into my driveway," she yells at me. My reply is not repeatable here.
A little later, different development. Pick-up truck coming toward me, crosses center line, keeps angling at me. I'm now off on the shoulder. As he passes, he's leaning out the window and I yell into his face as I pass, "What the f***, you as*hole." He stops the truck and yells something back. Now I'm expecting him to turn around and come after me. About three minutes later I'm about to go down a rather isolated road and I hear a diesel truck coming up behind me. I take a quick right turn back into the development where there are some people out on the lawn. I figure with witnesses he'll be less likely to run me down or shoot me. I hear him yell behind me, and I turn around and he's yelling, "Hey, man, I'm sorry." I waved him OK and he took off.
He had turned around in order to catch up to me. And I'll never know if an apology is what I would have gotten had I continued down that long lonesome road.
Because of incidents like this, I have thought seriously about carrying a little .22 with me. Sooner or later, the chances are good that I'm going to get into a face-to-face with some redneck whose wife just left him. But, I don't want the extra weight on my bike!
