  1. Let's all say a short prayer for the bravest of all cyclists, that will
begin the greatest cycling race in the world, the Race Across America,
tomorrow. Weather doesn't look good for the start, as they'll be going
through searing heat in the deserts of California and western Arizona. I
predict 120 degree road temperatures. They'll have to forget that they're
in a race, and pace themselves more slowly than they want to, if not they'll
DNF right off the bat, like some did last year. If a heat stroke hits
you, it's all over, their isn't enough recovery time. Just keep it on the
edge, but don't go over. Wait till you hit the pine country in Northern
Arizona, and then pick up the pace.

They're the bravest in maybe the same sense that everyone that was sitting
at a desk when the plane came through the window was a hero. 120 degree road
temperatures don't require bravery. And 'it's all over' means the race is
over - bravery is if they leave them on the road to die. Somehow, growing up
in Texas and Kansas, I have a real problem getting excited about your
dangers. It isn't hot until you leave footprints on the tennis court from
    your tennis shoes.

I'll resist the temptation to call them the stupidest of all cyclists,
because it is their time and effort and they can spend it as they will. I've
yet to see what it proves in any real way or what it accomplishes. I've been
at a checkpoint three times in the past and frankly, there was nothing about
it that appealed to me (and if the bike shop owner that talked me into it
against my better judgment ever asks again, I'll run him over with a truck).
Better time spent at a club time trial held in a mosquito feeding marsh
because it was the only flat place the club could find than ever again at
    the Nonsense Race Across America.

And FWIW, being a RAAM fan is too much like stalking.

I think I've figured out why they don't test for dope at RAAM. It's
    because RAAM isn't considered entertainment.

Too true ... raam isn't really about bicycle racing is it but more about
    sleep deprivation ?

    Yawn ....

    TdF is a race.

Texas heat aint nothimg compared to Florida where you can cook an egg
inside the foot print left by your tennis shoe.

It was hot enough one day out here that the glue holding the velcro strips to the
straps on my shoes got loose. ("Why do my shoes feel loose?"😉 Does that count?

But the fact it's their time doesn't negate the stupid.

Yes, but let that be a lesson to you - don't use velcro on your shoes for
    the really hard rides...

Keep them for things like RAAM.
