Got one for $200 in 1985. Remember it distinctly because it had a loop A to B feature which was very handy for trying to do a take down of a song by ear. Couldn't do that with a cassette.

I think you are wrong. I was always a big audiophile and I remember that the Sony CD offering was $700 in 1985. I had a friend that bought one and I scoffed at the time.

It was a cheap Technics unit. Being a college student making $3.50/hour at a part time job. There's no way it cost more than $250. My piano cost me $900 and I had to make payments on it for a year.

There were features on some of the early ones that seemed kinda wierd back then that have long since vaporized from the market. A friend had a disc player that came with pitch control (an attenuator?) - twist a knob and you could speed up or slow down the disc. Curious.
I held out on buying a disc player for a long time. Vinyl is king.
