At Conwy itself there's a bridge over the river using the A 547
(presumably the "old" road). Further west the A55 goes into tunnels
again at Penmaen-bach which look like they can be avoided by using the
"old road" again, round the headland.

You're right. But there's now a cycle path from Prestatyn to Llandudno, so
that avoids a lot of the A55. Anglesey is full of small roads, so it's
Conwy to Bangor that could be problematic. If it's too bad, I'll skip some
by using the train. I found lots of good info at the North Wales CTC site:
