South but Cadair has no such distinction. The adjacent Aran Fawddwy is
higher. Plynlimon closer to midway.

Tradition.....

Cadair has status, as a tourist hill going back a long time....
Traditonal three great hills of Wales - Snowdon, Cadair, Pumlumon.

Just one of those things that happens in the folklore. I expect that
doing Aran Fawddwy would not be so impressive on a sponsor form, as
outside the hill goers its not such a well known hill.

This has been going on in fellrunning circles for a little while now.
Often referred to as the three principal peaks of Wales. Cadair Idris is
chosen as being the highest in Mid Wales. Where you define the borders
of Mid Wales is probably up for debate though - Aran Fawddwy is a little
further north and probably in North Wales, at least. I have heard of
Punlumon being added to make it the four principal peaks.
