I have spent many miles with my grandchildren and their friends and
they are much more aware on the bikes and likely to ditch the helmet
and do something riskier on foot because they don't
'have to' wear a helmet.

Children need helmets 27/7. At least my kids did when they were
little. But when my kids were little.....there were no helmet laws. I

Did you mention the learing to ice skate helmet? I had lots of knots
on my head from that until I learned it was more fun to stay upright
and go fast. Still can't skate backwards, but sure can go fast straight.

Helmets were not needed when I was a kid in the 50s and my generation
is still here, just not sissies. We get bonked on the head and we learn.
That is called life. What's next? Helmets for babies in case they crawl
out of thier crib? Find a line and draw it. I rode a motorcycle at way
over 160 MPH, not KPH with no helmet and it was FFUUNN. I tried it with
a helmet and the damn thing tried to tear me head off. You have to go
through a period called youth before growing up, and most survive. I did,
although some will say with brain damage, but that was drinking too much,
a sport that is quite legal due to tax revenues. Dry now and wishing I
had never touched a drop, but that also is one of lifes lessons,
moderation.
I rode a tricycle at nearly 50 when I was 4(5?) years old down a hill and
got
brought home by the cops in like 1952, and I wasn't wearing a helmet then
either.

a helmet and get creamed by a truck on the way home.

BillI'm with you, Bill. I'm a 1950's woman who happily grew up
pedaling fast on a Schwinn (1 speed) and feeling the wind
rush through my hair. How sad that today's kids are lost to
that freeing experience.We have slowly transformed into a country where minority
mishaps dictate everyday living to the masses. Freedom
of personal choice is being regulated by laws out of the
mishaps of the minority numbers.While bowling several years ago my feet didn't stop at the foul line
and down the alley I went, arms flailing and feet flying, until I
finally fell backward banging my head. Just think.....I could have
found a greedy lawyer and manipulated the system into transforming
the sport of bowling forever (after investing in 'Bowling Helmets'
of course).Wouldn't that have been sad for the masses of bowlers? "But, if it
saves one bowler, it would be worth it.".....??????

stamped steel. Now they're made of shiny aluminum, they're called
"Razors" and of COURSE no kid should ever use one without a helmet!!!But, funny thing: Riding home from work recently, I passed a helmeted
kid with his scooter standing on top of a picnic table in his yard. He
had a long plank of wood running from the table down to the ground. To
hold it in place, the end was up against the house foundation.And sure enough, he balanced the scooter on the board, rolled on down
and smacked right into the wall of the house!I'm sure his helmet saved his life. ;-) But I wonder if a little less
