My wife and I have decided to add a few more days to our
trip to GB, may as well round out the 2nd week! We are
spending the first week in the Yorkshire Dales, then 3 days
in London and now want to add 3 more days. Our preference is
for good walking areas (day walks) with good scenery, some
hills and not too crowded. We would drive from London, stay
3 nights and then have to return to Heathrow to fly home. I
was wondering if anyone here has any suggestions as to where
to go? The South West?, Dartmoore National Park?, Isle of
Wight?,or the South East? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Steve.

walking there.stretch to the Brecon Beacons in Wales - non of these would
involve too much driving. You could look at North Wales but
this would be too much walking for me.--

I suspect that the Brecon Beacons would be a lot closer to
London than Dartmoor, pretty much straight along the M4, 3
or so hours?Andrew

in the middle that we stayed in last year. :-) exmoor-exmoor-Open ↗

Whilst in London you could consider:
Hampstead Heath Richmond Park The Chilterns (my favourites -
Turville, round Chequers, Wendover, Bledlow) You can make a
nice walk round Greenwich, too -

hills and not too crowded (though there will be a fair
number of people around) within easy driving access from
London. Straight down the M4 westwards. Good for getting
back to Heathrow, too, as you just drive back east along the
M4 until you see the sign!Base yourselves in Crickhowell for the more eastern side
(there's a campsite, B & Bs and a couple of OK pub-hotels in
town), or, for a slightly less busy area, go out a bit
further west to the Black Mountain (singular...the Black
Mountains, plural, are on the east of the Brecon
Beacons...confusing to the uninitiated!). There are places
to stay around the Glyntawe/ Dan-yr-Ogof Caves area (from
camping through B & B to hotels).Rob

SE? Not really. There are walks we do because they are local
but other than the Thames path, nothing you *need* to do.

rounded hills in the Beacons. Why not try to include some
rugged scenery? i.e. Snowdonia? Pretty good access from
London, if a little further.Paul

Pointless going to Wales then :-)
Seriously plenty of rounded lumps in North Wales too... I
think the Black Mountains/Brecon idea is sound, not too bad
from London, ditto Exmoor.Richard Webb

country in the Stonor, Turville, Christmas Common, Pishill
area, with a bit of up and down thrown in for good measure. And of course, there's always Wiltshire; the Ridgeway and
around Avebury. Avebury is worth a visit in its own right
and there's lots of other prehistory about down there too.Almost anywhere but London, dreadful, de-humanising place
that it is

Still great scenery though, even if you don't climb to
the tops.I agree about the scenery. I prefer North Wales, personally,
to the Beacons, even when just walking and not climbing. I
was just thinking of the tradeoff between travel time and
complexity and them getting in amongst some decent size
hills. It's less than 3 hours to, say, Crickhowell from
Heathrow area, and around almost 5 hours to, say, Llanberis
(OK, I do it a *teeny* bit faster than that if the traffic
around Brum isn't too bad, but I'm assuming they won't be
thrashing their car. It's also dead easy to get the the
Beacons...just the M4 and then an A road, rather than
faffing about deciding on M6 toll/ no toll, M42/ M5/ M54/ A5
( especially that last, endless seeming bit of the A5).I think either North Wales or South Wales would be good
choices, though, since it gets our visitors into
another country of the British Isles, with its own
distinctive culture.I do find the Beacons area a bit more "general visitor-
friendly" than North Wales, which is more geared to
climbers/ more serious walkers, IMO... the campsites seem
better, the B & Bs just that bit more comfortable and the
food in pubs and inns on the whole a bit better...or maybe
I've just been bery lucky in South Wales and unlucky in
North Wales.Rob

Thanks to everyone for all the suggestions. We were still
undecided when we ran into a snag with the airfare which we
had already purchased. I knew we would be charged to change
it but I thought it was around $75 to $100 US. but as it
turns out it is $200 US which is ridiculous! Flying American
Airlines. So we will probably stick to our original plan but
thanks again for all the suggestions. Steve.
