Personally I think you jumped the gun and failed to properly plan.
Don't be embarassed and back away - learn from it and follow through.
So, Go and get DQed?
Yeah... so what? A DQ or a DNF isn't something you wear as an armbind for
the rest of your years.

What was your reason for wanting to enter this particular event
originally? It obviously was important enough at the time, and must
still be if you don't wish to race something else.
A challenge. I could never do fly. This would prove to myself that I
can do it.
I respect the premise, however are you sure it is an appropriate goal?
Please do not answer that one here, just in your own head.

As for not going at all, depends what you have invested so far. I
thought you had already spent some money on preparations. Experience
is valuable and cost something; so if you have already invested, go
and learn.
I have not spent the money on registrations fees or booking the motel
room.
It would be different if I have already done that.
Yes, yes it would.

Finally I come back to the instruction and money issue.
Personally I would want to do my best, knowing that I put in the work
and did what I had to do to reach my goal. Last year I committed to

If you are thinking of competing in a 100IM, something that should
last no longer than 2 minutes total -- you should fist be confident
in your strokes -- and you have already stated your butterfly and
freestyle crawl need serious work. Breaststroke and back-crawl are
the other two disciplines, plus the four various turns!
My front, besides the high stoke count is not that bad, neither is my
other 2 strokes.
My turns suck.
So what.. your goal is to simply finish without being DQ'd?
Sorry I don't get it; you said you cn swim 4km - but the goal is to
compete in the 100IM. Again... seriously? [censored], over in 2 minutes or
less?

Get some coaching, do some practice, train to be able to do 4 x 100
IM's. Be able to do a 200IM. Then enter in an event.
That is my thought.

Do you have ANY competitive swimming experience?
Yes, 10 years ago
Quoted message said:Have you sat through a swim meet and know the process? Warm-ups,
heats, finals - etc.
Yes, 10 years ago
Quoted message said:Do you know how to come off the starting blocks?
Sort of. Havent had to do it since I last raced. May end up doing
belly flops, but, with IM, you start in the water to do Back, right?
Umm.. first off, no. For the Individual Medley (IM) races you start on
top of the blocks, the order being Fly, Back, Breast, Free.
For Medley Relays the order would be Back, Brast, Fly, and Free
see the official rules here regarding medleys
http://www.fina.org/rules/SW/rules_sw9.htm
I can still do a mean start off the blocks, both in water backstroke
start and forward --- but I never mastered doing it with goggles, so any
distance (50 yards to 1650m) would be tough for me without training on
that deficiency, or preparing for it by learning to swim without googles
altogether and still make my turns.

It is your life, time, and money.
I know

We care, and are interested - but dammit you need to follow some
advice here if you keep asking.
Which of the three choices i listed would you do if you were in my
shoes?
I have told you already what i think.
One must understand, I don't know you, and I cannot know of all the
factors that influence your life and decisions -- and a person would be
foolish and not very well respected if he/she were to allow others to
tell him/her how to life their life.
Ask for advice (did that), weigh the information, filter out the bogus or
non-applicable, then make a decision for yourself; one that you can live
with and embrace. And really evaluate whether the goal is a baby step or
a long-term attainment. As I said for me I wanted to not only get back
into formal openwater swims, but specifically to do the Gatorman without
earning a DNF (1 hr 45 minute cutoff). That was a long-range goal that
worked over time laying the groundwork to accomplish other goals as well
(tracking 300 miles for the Calendar year period) and being able to do
the 3 mi in 1 hr 21 minutes. I was a little lost for a few weeks after
reaching these two goals but have a new one to work towards for next
September and I have laid out my plans/workouts to make it happen. My
total mileage since tracking has since passed 410 miles, and I hope to
hit 650 by September in addition to being ready to do the 1 miler
followed by the 3 mile Gator and then 2 weeks later participate in a 10
mile relay. If I were to set sights on doing a 50m free race as I had
done in age groups 25+ years ago that would not be much of an
accomplishment [for me] to proud of -- although sure my time back "then"
was something like 45-50 seconds and I can do it in under 28 seconds easy
now.
