a black toenail question

Leave it alone. It may or may not fall off eventually on it's own, which can
take a month or 2. No worries even if the whole thing falls off; it will
grow back fine.

How did you get it? Impact bruise from the top or pushing from the front of
the nail on your shoe? If the latter, consider going a size larger in shoes,
and keep your nails trimmed fairly short, particularly for longer events
and/or trail running.

What caused it? Sounds like you need larger shoes. However, if it
starts to hurt, unbend a paper clip and heat the end until it's red
hot, then poke it through the area where it's black. No pain since the
nail is dead, just don't go beyond the nail. You'll drain all the blood
trapped behind the nail and relieve the pressure. This will probably
save the nail. If it doesn't hurt at all then ignore it.
But get new shoes, or trim those claws.

i do not know how this happened for i keep my nails nice and trimmed. the
shoes i have been wearing for the past 3 months are the new balance 866
which i wear a half size larger than my normal street shoes and the new
balance 900 which i wear 1 full size bigger than my street shoe both of
which i purchased from a speciality running shoe store. as a matter of fact
this is the first time in my 35 years of running that i have gotten a black
toenail. this is why i find it so puzzling that out of nowhere i could get a
black toenail. thanks for the suggestions as to what to do. dave

Like I said, there's no pain whatsoever, just a nasty smell of fried
toenail.

Oh and BTW, if this ever happens to your pecker, don't try that method,
see a Dr instead.

The deal is, there's blood trapped under the nail causing pressure on
it. You poke a hole in the nail so it can drain, and relieve the
pressure.

Just paint it, and see what happens Dave.................whatever color
you usually use.
