I believe if you keep your ShimaNO rear derailleur, Campy 10 shifters
will shift the 7sp freewheel.

Yes. I have been riding Chorus Ergopower with 7 spd freewheels for
15+ years. Actually, the levers are 8 spd, but the rear derailleur
limit screw locks out the final "click".

How would buying 10sp shifters and a new derailleur be cheaper than just
getting the shifters? Particularly if he peruses ebay, I'm sure he can come
up with 8 spd shifters quite reasonably.

Campy rear derailler, Campy downtube shifters, ShimaNO hubs, Sachs-Mallard 7
spd freewheel.

I'm looking for the cheap way to Ergo power.

Campag record 8s ergo, racing triple f/r mech, shimano 600 (7s) hub and cassette. Works great. You can still get 8s ergos from www.parker-international.co.uk. Chorus=£127, Mirage=£72.

Centaur 10s levers & rear mech, shimano ultegra 9s hub, chain and cassette, again, works great.
