7 and 8 speed chain are the same thing.

    So, yes, they're compatible.

  4. 7- and 8-speed are exactly or almost exactly (depending on the make) the
same sprocket spacing, and the chains are the same width. Indeed, I've found
that 5-speed chainrings (old TA Cyclotouriste) are compatible with 10-speed
chains. I have Campagnolo 10-speed chain and cassette running on a TA crank
and chainrings. I did have to reduce the separation between the chainrings
though, to prevent the chain sometimes skating between the rings when
    changing down.

  8. i have a nashbar 9 speed measuring an eyeballed 1.95 mils in width
where the shimano 600 8 speed aluminum is 2 mills solid
i didn't measure the hi end steel '80's cr's on the shelf but mind's
    eye sez 2.05 or more
the width maybe a factor of buying aluminum plate in quantity not a
    per se design element
