Joggers are boring? I had no idea!

Just heard an on-the-run radio interview with Sir Ranulph in the first kilometres of his 42.2k in
Sydney. They are doing several different loops, centered on the Opera House mainly on the harbor
foreshore. All very scenic. The route was announced beforehand but I didn't see invitation for other
runners to join them.

Umm, no, not ACTUAL races. And well, not ACTUAL running, unless you count that bout of the
intestinal flu I just got over, which had me running to the lil' girlees room every 5 minutes. But I
mean seriously, I do talk a good run though, don't I? Actually running is so primitive, and far
beneath my social standing.

I like 3000m steeplechase races best, though I'm getting a little too old to get round them without
feeling rather too much discomfort for my liking. If you're talking road races, a flat out 5k is
about all I can cope with these days.

I came perilously close to doing a marathon in '87. I'd trained with a friend who was hoping to do a
2:40 and I thought, "What the hell. I've done all the training why not do the race?" Unfortunately,
my wife had the poor sense to miscarry our first child two days before the race. This kinda put me
off the marathon. Shame, 'cause I never did train that hard again.

anything I would not be inclined to believe it and just consider it another act of attention. The
only one I ever took the time to look up was Jenn o fir(and befor you time, Indy) since she was a
sincere, i.e. real runner, and by the way, is running great to this day. And I noticed she found you
as interesting as a two week case of the "runs" i.e diarrhea.

That was somewhat disappointing. Despite her rebuttal, I maintain that she was, by far, the most
interesting individual ever to grace this group - perhaps that's why she found me so dull?

I will confess I worry about her sometimes though I don't fully understand why. Perhaps it was her
mix of anger and intelligence, vulnerability and resilience. That can sometimes be a fatal
combination.

Though I'm sure she will survive quite happily without them, she has my best wishes for both her
personal and her athletic future.

Hi Globaldisc, Re Ranulph Fiennes and Mike Stroud who are attempting to meet The Land Rover 7x7x7
Challenge. Since you have made the choice to express your views on this event (I suspect that your
comments are tongue in cheek) I thought I would give you a little bit of follow up. The first run
was in Patagonia, Chile and was at this location instead of the originally planned run in Santiago
(Continent 1 = South America) The second run was in The Falkland Islands and with agreement and
arrangement with the sponsors this was the result of a) bad weather at King George Island and b)
Mechanical problems with the aircraft that was supposed to take the to King George Island. They were
in fact flown to the Falklands courtesy of the RAF (Continent 2 + Antarctica. The 3rd run was in
Sydney (Continent 3 = Australasia) The 4 th run was in Singapore (Continent 4 = Asia) The 5 th run
was from Windsor to London following the route of the 1908 Olympic Marathon. (Continent 5 = Europe)
The 6 th run was in Cairo, Egypt (continent 6 = Africa) The final 7 th run is the official New York
Marathon which takes place tomorrow Sunday 11/2/03

Further and contrary to your suggestion there is no such thing as an Arctic Continent, The Arctic is
a Northern polar geographical area. Also Ranulph Fiennes and Mike Stroud did indeed complete 2 of
their marathgon runs within a 24 hour period ie London commenced 07:30 GMT on Thursday and Cairo
which I believe was completed before 06:00 GMT on Friday morning. At this date it seems extremely
likely that these 2 remarkable British guys will complete the 7x7x7 challenge - a world first which
will find few takers at any time in the future. The least you could do would be to take your hat off
to a couple of world class athletes and better still make a contribution to the British Heart
Foundation ( The chosen charity for this event). Ranulph Fiennes suffered a sever heart attack in
June of this year (2003) which required emergency treatment of a double heart bypass operation.
