  1. I rode with my 6 year old daughter yesterday for 45kms on metro bike path.
She was on a $69 K-Mart Huffy. We had a great time and she was smiling all
the 5 hour and singing along. I was so proud of her until someone said that
    was child abuse.

What do you think? Anyone else have kids that young that ride that
    distance?

Cruel and unusual punishment indeed, on a huffy. She was probably
acting happy so as not to receive torture as well.

P.S. Buhahahaha! A friend of yours? Child abuse indeed. Should've
put them in the 4WD, less you be seen as unAustralian.

I saw plenty of young kids doing the 45km distance in Amy's Ride on the weekend. Whoever said that clearly has no idea about the resilience of children and how much energy they can have.

Child abuse is letting them sit in front of the TV to get fat and lazy.

ohhh that is fantastic to get your kid out riding that far... and if she is enjoying it thats even better! But I agree on a Huffy...! That is cruel.... 🙂

  6. My 6yo did 40 ks regularly - when he turned 7 he requested a bike with gears.

  7. who Says it abuse????????
Better that than having them sit in front of the playstation all day.

    Eh?

Has this someone been living under a rock for so long that the obesity
epidemic in Australia has passed them by? Is this someone ignorant to
the fact that Australia is the second fattest nation in the world?

Ferrying your kids everywhere by car, wrapping them in cotton wool from
the real world, feeding them processed [censored] and sugar drinks, chemicals
and lord knows what else, relying on the telly, playstation or whatever
to provide all their entertainment: THAT'S CHILD ABUSE!

Sharing physical past times with your child, spending a large chunk of
one on one time devoted to your child: man you should be applauded!
Heck I'm applauding you! Not many occasions in my life that I remember
my Dad spending five un-interrupted hours with me.

It's a creditable distance for a 6 year old, but if she's happy then I'd say
    it's anything but abuse.

Depends on the child and the ride. If she's smiling the whole way,
"someone" can go play in the traffic. I'd consider the 30km of Anderson's
fire trail to be nasty to most 16 year olds without experience, so I'd be
hesitant to take virtually any 6 year old down there. But a 45km bike path
cruise, with the option to bail as soon as anyone feels uncomfortable?
    That's fantastic!

I don't have littlies, you say she was singing & laughing during the entire ride? If so, whoever mentioned the [censored] about 'child abuse' can go feck themselves sideways. With a dessert fork.

Seriously I'd be damn proud to have a kid like that. And she is fortunate to have a fantastic, supportive parent, such as yourself. 🙂

    I don't have kids so I wouldn't really have a clue. Though I'm curious to ask some questions;
How long has she been riding for?
What other distances has she covered and how often?
How long did it take to do the 45km ride?
How many stops and how long where they?
Did you stop for food & liquid?

Spose these questions have stemed form people telling me I'm 'Mad' for riding 200km. But I reckon most people can do it *IF* they work up to it. I didn't just go out and start riding 200km. I increased the distance over months. Mind you, it still trashes me, but the time I'm doing it in is dropping and so is the recovery time.

As long as you took your fair share of turns on the front and helped her
download the heart rate data once you got home then I reckon that it is OK.

No way I would classify it as "child abuse".......it would be different if
you were making her ride it despite her complaining of it hurting but
otherwise good on you for spending the time with her. My 7 y.o. son keeps
hitting me up to come on one of the Sunday BRs with me and I have great
troubles trying to explain to him that we would go too fast for him and he
probably wouldn't be up for 80 km or so. I ended up having to have a race
with him up the street and back to prove that even though I am old, I am
much faster than him at this stage (lucky I only had him on a restricted
gear!!!). I think I might have to make an effort to take him out for a ride
on a bike path one of these days for at least a few km or so......might keep
Mum and the sag wagon in reserve in case he runs out of steam or interest
before we get back to where we start from!!!

Keep spending quality time with your daughter..............Ride On,

Probably someone with a child so fat and lazy that it /would/ be abuse to
make it ride that far. As long as she's spinning easily rather than pushing
a high gear, which is bad for developing joints, it's great.

JayWoo has nailed it. depending on the terrain, I suspect it may be something short of a good thing to plonk a 7 yo on a huffy and expect them to grind out 45km without any form. If they ride a lot and have built up to it, then sure no problems. I have twin 7yo daughters and while they think daddy is cool for riding a bike half the day on weekends, they think the ride to the park 1km away (where they will play energetically like apes on the monkey bars for the next hour while daddy "recovers" from his ride) is too long and boring blah blah blah. If they're eating right, its amazing how much "work" a little kid can get through in a day.

Make physicality a part of everyday life for them. If its working up to doing 45 km bike rides - cool. If its 20 mins on the trampoline and an hour of tiggy - great.

Fortyfive kms in five hours. That's 9km/h, hardly double that of walking. I don't think at that speed there's much danger of blowing knee joints etc etc, that pace is a really gentle tootle perfectly suited to bike path.

Five hours of smiling and singing along doesn't sound like someone
suffering child abuse. It sounds like the person who made the comment is
fat and lazy. When I was a kid, the rules were like this: play in your
room 6-7am, eat breakfast, brush teeth, run around outside until lunch,
eat lunch, run around until dinner, eat dinner, read until bed (I guess
that was an effort to slow the heart rate?) I don't know why parents
try to "protect" there young'uns from exercise. And dirt. If she was
having fun, good on her, and good on you for encouraging her love of
    exercise and the outdoors!

I went to a circus festival and this little boy freaked out on the
flying trapeze platform, and just started screaming. Most people who
freak out will grab the bar, swing into the centre and get lowered by
the harness. But this kid wouldn't budge. The people who run it,
including a 7 month pregnant woman - for whom there was no spare
harness, and she could've gotten kicked off if the kid freaked out -
were all up there to calm him down, and help him climb down the ladder.
Eventually he came down. His mum was so appreciative of the work the
staff had done, but another woman came up and said she would report the
    staff for child abuse.

(Yet no such thing was said for the poor little girl whose mum made her
perform drop tricks from 10m in the air over concrete, no crash mats,
despite the fact she was crying the entire time.)
