  1. It felt like it anyway. We (the boys and I) went out for a gentle
trundle, 50 miles moderate pace, Michael on his solo and Pete on the
    tandem with me.

But it really was uphill and into wind all the way!

Still, Michael's recovered now and is happy enough (though disgruntled
that Pete got to ride the tandem).

I went out yesterday to visit the P*nct*r* F**ry having not seen her
for a while. Decided that I needed a good length ride before the audax
at the end of the month so went to do a circuit of the Tay Estuary. It
is getting scary when you can discernably trace your route on the whole
    UK weather map.

Having booked the time off from a disgruntled SWMBO (last weekend of
school holidays here) I set of in inclement weather to do th esouth
side first. Lots of 'rolling' hills to Newburgh (and a stop to fix a
puncture, gash that was big enough to warrant a new tyre, had to put a
patch complete with paper backing inside the tyre to prevent a future
blowout on the route. Also decided a decent compact road pump was in
order as my ageing zefal sp3 has seen better days.

Anyhow, nice ride out through Bridge of Earn. Young lad on an MTB blows
past with that forced 'good morning' of the 'busting a gut but trying
to make it look easy' variety. And then drops to the same pace about
50m ahead. I just keep spinning. Long climb up into Perth and I'm
slowly catching him (not really trying, honest, though I might have put
in a teensy bit more effort) then a drop down to the town centre. This
is a nice fast descent. I did blow past him coming into the ring road
but had picked up a bus to slipstream (and dropped it just before
    passing ;-)

Lunch at the Macmillan Cancer Coffee shop at Quarrymill, then over
Kinnoull hill and back along the flat to Dundee. Stop in the LBS for a
new tyre on the way. ANd get home after 90km. Rolling average 24km/h.
Overall average 20km/h including lunch stop and punctures.

Nice day out. Then took the kids to the climbing wall for the first
    time. Big grins all round.

Yeah, its a bummer when you get home and realise that you're hovering 100 ft
above your starting point, and have to look for a soft place to land.

Yeah, its a bummer when you get home and realise that you're hovering 100 ft

But it doesn't work like that. Its that Escher drawing where you climb
continously to get back to where you started. The only difference with
a bike is that if you turn round and go the other way you still have to
    climb

That's when you need your personal helicopter, of course...

Every self-respecting cyclist should be able to rig a self-rescue
abseiling device from a derailleur mech.
