£500-£600 Mountain Bike

Hi, yeah you're looking in a good price range for a nice
hardtail with a reasonable level of equipment. Treks are
popular at that level, as are Specialized, Scott and a few
others. Kona and Orange have one or two models in that price
bracket but you may find better equipment levels on the
first three I mentioned. Also worth taking a look at
Merlin's offerings online at www.merlin.co.uk (but i guess
you can only test ride one if you live in Manchester area).
They're held highly for punching above their weight in the
bang-for-buck stakes, both in ride quality and kit level. I
don't work for them btw...

If you're in luck you might find somewhere selling off a
previous model for a good discounted price, and that way you
will often get a whole load more for you money.

You've already got the right idea about test riding some to
compare, it really should be the biggerst factor in helping
you decide.

I bought a Trek 6700 at the same time a riding buddy bought
his Rainier almost 2 years ago. I haven't had any major
issues with the Trek so far, apart from some crappy
Bontrager components (seat and seatpost namely). Although I
like the Trek's frame better, the Giant comes stock with a
nicer fork and disc brakes which I imagine come in more
handy in your weather than mine. Some will tell you the
frames on these bikes suck, and they do if you're that damn
good. I routinely ride down a trail with many 1' - 2' drops
and my frame is holding up well, as you would expect. Though
my fork is begging for an overhaul. Those of us that don't
ride in competition agree the Trek's SLR frame is super
stiff. Many like this, I'm starting to wish I had built up a
steel hardtail. I bought the Trek over the Giant because I
thought I would be going crazy upgrading this thing and
wanted a nice foundation. Now that I'm into the sport, I
think when the funds come I will build something a little
more special than upgrade this. Thus I recommend the Giant.

Go to WH Smith an get the current mountain bike mags.. Have
ads in for shops doing deals on last years models etc so you
could get a bike that would have cost £8-900 6mths ago.

I quite like the norco storm, it handled up to about 4'
drops before the shocks started to complain, although I
understand they may have changed some things on it now. (a
thousand curses on the thieves with my bike)

indeed. I'm slowly figuring out how this whole usenet thing
works, and trying to rummage through all the endless [censored]
and empty newsgroups to find the ones I want. didn't think
of mtb's until now since mine got removed from my house.
