  1. I'm turning 50 on October the 4th.

Here's my challenge to all others turning 50 this year.

50 rides of 50 km your 50th birthday year.

Or if you are really gung-ho, 50 rides of 50 miles.

I need a web page to set it up and to get folks to register and log
    their rides. Any ideas?

Dude, there are plenty of over 50 guys doing that already. Actually,
some of the ones I know already do about double that. It's good for you
to have goals appropriate for yourself so get after it!

Well, without wanting to be negative, Davey still cranks out between 50 and
150 klicks a day and being 50 is just a distant memory for him, so your goals are
    modest.

But having said that, in looking for a home to move the Six-Day site to, since
in the not too distant future, should the Reaper spare him, he is going
Walkabout and won't have a permanent home or ISP, Davey investigated dozens of
``Free'' hosts and found 741.com to be best suited to his needs and the
StatCounter.com Hit Counter/Site Data Analyzer to be the best available free
    stuff around.

from the subject, I thought this was a swimming workout - get in the pool and do 50x50m efforts on 50sec interval. That should determine if your ticker is working properly or not.

  5. You better get Crackin'!!!

When you turn 1 you have lived your first year. When you turn 50 you
have lived that 50th year already.

You've got just over a month to get it done.

Don't whine or complain.... just do it!

    You are of course right.

But more often people think of the 50th year as starting after the 50th
    Birthday.

A week or two back I mentioned that the Greek Shindig was the first Follies of
the 21st century. Athens was of course, but on a par with most of the world
having celebrated the dawn of the new century on January 1, 2000 the OZ
shindig was considered my many to be the first.

Nobody took issue with me so I assume that RBR denizens are, as a whole,
possessed of Grey Matter superior in quality to most of the rest of the
    Plebians on the Planet. 🙂

But on the Y2K bug thing, and thinking about time, instead of paying countless
millions collectively in overtime and security and whatever, all that was
necessary was to sit back and see what happened in NZ and then OZ before
deciding to hit the panic button.

    People are sure funny sometimes.

I'm turning 60 next month and I've already hit 4,000 miles for the year
including a whole lot of 50 mile rides. 50 klicks? That's 37 miles - sissie
    stuff.

You, my friend, are exceptional. I'm 21 and wish I had the stamina to turn
out 150 klicks just once, though I'm sure one of these days I'll try it and
I'm pretty sure I won't die. At least not completely.

The method that a friend of mine and I used when we were young and stupid
was simply to double the longest ride we had ever done. It didn't take long
to get up to 150km :-) Of course we needed to stop several times for
food/water and were always completely destroyed for a few days afterwards
but at least the mental barrier was overcome.

Or you could try the less painful way and extend your longest rides by 10 km
    each time you do one.

3 days a week I ride 49 'klicks' into the office and 51 klicks home in
    the evening.
I rest and ferry the other two days. I am definitely a wuss and

Gee, that's an easy way to increase your mileage, isn't it.

Out here in Tucson there are loads of 60+ and 70+ riders doing 5 to
10,000 miles per year. And some of them hike on their "off" days.
It's great to have 330+ days of sunshine a year and be retired!

er, i really wouldn't recommend your first method. where did you stop
    doubling anyway? at 150 k?

i don't know what my longest ride was. i know i did some 5 hour plus
rides, and they sucked. (keeping in mind my super speedy travel at 13 or
14 miles per hour, so they weren't as far as some might think)

I do not recommend the first method, except to instill the masochistic
instint that's so necessary for cycling. We stopped at 180 km, although it
took about a year. We typically only rode on weekends and of course didn't
try to go for a new record every time. After that I think we bumped it up to
about 240km in the next year before we (almost) stopped being silly. It was
counterproductive to being good at crits (most of our races) but we did
    pretty well in road races.

One time my friend did a 270 km ride solo, which was his only training ride
for the week. About five years later I did the same ride just to see what it
was like. I've not exceeded it since :-)

5 hours is also my limit now (if I have the time). It's a *long* time to sit
    on a bike saddle.
