I am after a 44t 4 bolt chain ring for a Shimano MTB crankset. Can you beleive I cannot find a cheap one anywhere ? Cecil Walker said $ 80, but the crankset is either Alivio or Acera and I can buy a new complete crankset for $ 90 !
I buy lots of stuff from Phantom by the only have 32t at what I think is reasonable ($ 24.95)
I've tried a few other LBS that just don't have them (they have expensive Race Face ones), I'm just after an el-cheapo for my commute.
Any one have know where I can pick a cheap one up ?

Unless Shimano have upgraded their 8-speed groupsets both Alivio and Acera have a 42t big ring. I know because my bike came with an Alivio crank set and I upgraded the big ring to a Deore 44t (which I was lucky enough to get from a non-retail source). But the point is CW are wrong about the crankset.

Take a look at the BBB ones. they make a good range of rings/cassettes. Peter Moore's might be worth a go too

I had the same issue replacing my middle ring.... gave up and spent the $90 and the whole new crank set.. So I do have a spare Alivio crank set + three rings sitting here spare.. the large ring is in ok condition I think... Inner east melb 'burbs if you want to check it out..

Haven't tried them myself but I've heard recommendations about BBB chainrings. Apparently they are a bit thicker and heat treated ro something, making them more durable than Shimano.
However, the BB road rings actually cost more than so they'd wanna be better.
