I don't know where you've ridden in hills John. I understand that in
New York there are some hellacious steep climbs even if they don't go
on forever. That's the way it is in the Bay Area here. I can hardly
imagine riding up an 8 km climb that is steeper than most of the
steepest streets in San Francisco.

I agree with your that reality is a LOT better than trick photography.

yes, they should have left the picture as it was, 22% is beastly steep
! That's "only" 12.4 degrees though and there are many streets that
are steeper in SF though,

automobiles. They list:

1 (tie). 31.5% gradient. Filbert between Leavenworth and
Hyde; 22nd Street between Church and Vicksburg
3. 29%. Jones between Union and Filbert.
4. 27.9%. Duboce between Buena Vista and Alpine.
5 (tie). 26%. Jones between Green and Union; Webster
between Vallejo and Broadway.
7 (tie). 25%. Duboce between Divisadero and Alpine;
Duboce between Castro and Divisadero.
9. 24.8%. Jones between Pine and California.
