Basically 27" is slightly larger in diameter. Sheldon Brown at www.harriscyclery.com has the skinny on wheel and tire sizes.

Since boretroll couldn't answer your question, I will. 27" wheels are 630mm in diameter and 700c wheels are 622mm...so an 8 mm differential in wheel/tire height. Many people mistakenly believe the C is for centimeter or metric reference but it isn't. BTW...tires for each are not interchangeable but 27" inch wheels are generally spec'ed with 700c tubes....you just have to make sure that the widths correlate....25mm = 1 inch, 28mm = 1-1/8" etc.

HTH,
Georgethanks very much for the info i was just trying to work out what it meant so I asked you guys. so if buy "700c" tyres or tubes you can fit them onto 27" wheels? or only inner tubes with the 700c spec?

You cannot put 700c tires on 27" wheels or the other way around. The sizes are different and incompatible !! Did you not bother reading what the man Sheldon had to say?

It did get answered Georgie.....AFWIW, the 630 and 622 are not wheel diameter. It's bead seat diameter.

as usual boretroll doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. Smeg...please reread what I wrote...the tires are "not interchangeable"...you must mount 27" tires on 27" rims and 700c tires on 700c rims but you will be hard pressed to find 27" tubes...much more rare than even 27" tires which pretty much have been superceded by the common 700c road bike wheel/tire size. As to tubes, I own two vintage Paramount road bikes with Continental SP 1000 27 1-1/8" tires with 700c /28mm tubes and I have run this combination for years. Anybody who knows anything about road bikes knows that 700c tubes work perfectly with 27" tires and why you have seen such a reduction in 27" tube inventory at all bike shops around the country. The rule for tube sizing applies the same for 27" and 700c wheels and tires...the tube width must correlate to the width tire you are running.

HTH,
GeorgeJust more BS ...Georgie.Tubes stretch(within limits). Many tubes are sized to fit a range of widths as in 20-25 or even 28. One can cause problems for themselves tho by trying to stuff a too big tube into a small tire.

You seriously want to tlk about net worth dude?

Art you are right of course. I am not a big fan of Orwellian board police because boys will be boys and sometimes not play nice which can even be fun at times. That said, I do respect this forum's laissez faire policy, but in the case of boudreaux, his conduct is so consistently rancorous, he should be barred. Cheers Art,

At least it beats being consistently wrong, or lost in the over analysis fog. 🙄

Nah, he's just a gnarly puppy dog with great advice. Getting free advice and then complaining about the packaging is a bit foolish. Kumbaya & diversity, dude..... -

I'll second that. I've sometimes received boudreaux's sharp comments to, but it's when I've either been wrong, or gotten out on a limb with an opinion. This forum wouldn't be the same without his real experience and depth of knowledge.Further, in this case, I thought his initial answer to the OPs question was right on target. On the other hand, George's answer seems misleading and incomplete. First, he said the 27 inch/700mm wheels had 630/622mm diameters, rather than explaining these smaller measurements were the bead seat diameters. Second, he correctly said the C doesn't mean centimeters, but failed to explain it meant "clincher". His attempt to outdo boudreaux's response didn't indicate to me he really knows his stuff.
Lastly, George began his answer by using a degrading nickname he cutely invented for boudreaux. I find that practice juvenile, antagonistic and offensive.

Agree that albeit sometimes a bit caustic Boud's advice has been very valuable;but not so sure that I buy that the C is really meant as a designation for clincher. My understanding was simply that there are archaic hook-bead rim size designations of 700, 700A, 700B, 700C, 700D of which the C has been the predominant one that has stuck for roadies.
The following is one of the more complete rim/tire sizing charts I have seen

I think it's pretty clear who's being juvenile, antagonistic and offensive.I can hardly see using the words "depth of knowledge" to describe someone who responds to every post with some variation of 1) That's BS, 2) You're an A$$hat, or 3) Sheldon Brown says...

so who has actually answered my question correctly?

good points made by most. A conundrum really :p A guy with good advice who is a despicable person. And hence why he is allowed to continue. Cappy, its guys like you who abet guys like boudreaux by tolerating his slurs. Ends justify the means for you huh bub? Guess guys that surround themselves with toxic people figure it ain't no thang. What's one more? And so it goes. A thread has been dedicated to boudreaux in the past BTW in terms of whether it is worth it to put up with his demeaning comments so in effect the board has voted:
cyclingforums.comt97322 .htmlOpen ↗
His initial response is...its a barge load. Well it is...more than a barge load...hahaha.
What maybe some know and a few don't is guys like bourdeaux get off on this attention because they don't get it in life...why they become trolls to begin with. This is their cowardice outlet...a way of striking back. Only real defense is banning them as there is no changing their behavior which they revel in... no playing nice.
We all have seen this type of conduct before on other boards. There are many knowledgeable bike people out there and having a toxic guy like boudeaux isn't worth it in my view but I understand how others feel. Cappy, guys like boudreaux drive knowledgeable people away because he kills their passion for contributing. As to your analysis dhk...lol...sorry brother, Supergrill is correct...the C is a serial reference and not a clincher designation. You were right however that I did omit that information, but did so intentionally as I didn't want to further confuse smeg who still BTW can't seem to fathom the answer. You think Smeg knows the difference between bead diameter and wheel diameter?
Smeg, support your LBS man, if the above doesn't sort it out for you. It is pretty elementary stuff and your answer is in front of you.
As as Cappy wrote....Kumbaya y'all. I will add...enjoy the taste of the swamp.
George
